Milk/Formula in a sippy

When did you start putting the BM or formula in a sippy cup? I introduced a sippy recently (well, tried like 3 of them before finding one Z would take) and now he drinks all his water and juice during the day from the sippy cup. I'm wondering if i should put his formula in the sippy too now that he's drinking from it.

The only thing is that he doesn't hold it himself consistently. I don't know if it's too heavy for him (I think it's a 7oz sippy) but he will only hold it with 1 hand and when he holds it with 2 hands he doesn't hold it up all the way and I have to help. I'm assuming that since he is *trying* that this will improve with time.

Is it a good idea to wait til he can hold it consistently before putting the milk in? does it matter? Am I over analyzing the situation? LOL.

Re: Milk/Formula in a sippy

  • I had Alex totally on a sippy only by the time he was 10 months old. Probably started consistently using it when he was 9 months old or so. I would let him get used to the cup before you start using it as his main source of drinking : )

  • Around 8.5 month (when he started crawling), Nicky started squirming on my lap and refusing to let me feed him his daytime bottles.  He just wanted to get down and crawl around on the floor playing.  I had read once that if you let your baby carry the bottle around with them, it is harder to get them off of the bottle, s at that point I began putting his daytime formula feedings in the sippy cup and he just got a bedtime bottle.

When I started the transition to whole milk at 11 months, I only offered it in a cup, never in a bottle.  He gave me no problem drinking it that way because he didn't know that drinking milk in the bottle was even an option.  When I ran out of my last can of formula a week before he turned one, that was the end of the bedtime bottle and he has been 100% on the cup ever since.

  • Thanks for your input ladies! I'm thinking in another week or two I might start introducing one of his formula bottles in the sippy during the day and see what he thinks!

Tonight I was giving him his bedtime bottle in the living room and had the tv on and he just wanted to sit there and drink his bottle and watch tv. lol. would have been so much easier if he was drinking from the sippy since it has handles!

  • I also had Zoe completely off the bottle before she was 1. I say the earlier the better. Even if he's not perfect at holding it, try just putting 4oz in the sippy so it's not as heavy. Get him used to drinking his formula out of something otehr than the bottle so he won't give you a hard time when you want him off bottles!
  • We introduced water in a sippy when Sophia started solids at 4 months. 6 months she could hold it and drink from it herself if it was not too heavy. By 8 months she was holding it and the bottle herself from start to finish.

We introduce whole milk at 11 months old totally in a bottle. At 12 months I started putting it in a sippy. By 13 months she was off the bottle altogether except for the last nighttime bottle which we kept for another month or so. She has been completely bottle free since 15 months old.

  • Have you tried giving him the bottle to hold and see if he finishes it? That was good practice for Sophia.

I 100% agree with this.  Kendall has been drinking her water (she won't drink juice) from a sippy for months - but she will not drink formula/milk from it.  I really wish I had started earlier - rather than wait until 11 months.  Best of luck.

  • I agree, even if he's not holding them perfect start now. I made the mistake of trying too close to our trip here last Sept. and wouldn't take it, now that he's almost 16mos. he still won't take it. I have tried them ALL and he will take them empty, but if they have any liquid in them, he tosses them around.  I plan on trying when I get home next week.

  • Like a lot of the others, I was giving Alexis water and juice out of a sippy by 6 months or so - never out of a bottle.  It was easier for her out of a straw sippy so I used that.  I started at about 10.5 months with the sippy for milk and I would only give her a bottle at night and by 12 months she was off the bottle totally.  She wouldn't hold it heself either, but I would sit her between my legs and hold it for her, until she started taking over and wanting to hold it herself.  I figured there was no need to rush it and that she would hold it when she was ready.  I was just happy she wasn't using a bottle and that it was very easy.
