RANT - Caffeine comments...this will shut them up...

Dear annoying people who make comments about my one iced coffee a day:

If I were not pregnant, and you saw me outside of work smoking a cigarette or snorting coke, chances are you would NOT say anything to me.  So why do you think it's OK to say something to me about my coffee?  First of all, do you x-ray vision and KNOW that my coffee is caffeinated?  Because sometimes I do get decaf or half regular, half decaf.  Secondly, I don't give a rat's @ss what you, your wife or whoever did or didn't have during their pregnancy.  Thirdly, I don't make comments to you about what you eat for lunch or drink.  I personally think soda is disgusting.  I don't ever drink it or buy it for my house with it's 17 teaspoons of sugar in it, but I'm not going to say anything to you when I see you drinking 3 a day!

  • I had just the opposite happen to me last week.  I ordered a Decaf frap from Starbucks and the guy said we don't make decaf because they are premade.  Why do you need a decaf?  I said because I am pregnant then he asked me how much caffeine I have had that day and assured me one cup was not going to hurt my baby.  Yes, I know a lot of people drink caffeine but it is my choice not to so can you just back off?
  • Love it! I should post this on the wall outside my cube.

  • HAHAHA YES.

Today I asked my co-irker: Ever heard of decaf?

She DID shut up. It was AWESOME!

  • Huh. I can't believe coworkers comment on seeing you drink coffee! That's ridiculous. I always pick up a half-caf coffee on my way to work and no one has said anything yet. Maybe they're all secretly horrified Big Smile

I am actually quite tempted to do the same.  It makes me so angry!

    Agreed.

I get decaf but still don't appreciate disapproving looks or outright shaking of the head when people must assume it's regular.

I never respond to these people - forget them. Who cares what they think? My doctor told me 2 coffees a day were fine. I'm not doing it, but I'm pretty sure my OB knows more than the jackass soccer Mom at Starbucks.

They're right up there with people who I can see blatantly trying to see if I have a wedding ring on.

YES. I AM PREGNANT. I AM MARRIED. It's none of your business, old-nosy-lady-in-the-checkout-line.

How RUDE!  That takes some serious balls!

  • Good for you! And you're right. For some reason, just being pregnant is enough for people to stop minding their own business. Yeesh.

  • Yes i LOVE you.  I might even print this out and post it on my cube.  I drink a tall, iced chai tea with soy milk a few times a week and maybe have one pepsi on the weekends if I'm hot and cranky.  And, I get caffeine comments ALL THE TIME.  Like people know what my generic, tan, milky drink is.  Thanks, morons, but my iced tea has less caffeine than your 5 diet cokes that you think are healthy.  I'm joining your rant party.
  • People need to mind their own business!  What is it about pregant women that makes people turn off all of their sensors and just say whatever comes to mind? Jerks.

  • You should come up with some scientific response:

"Well actually, according to research on caffeine during pregnancy, pregnant women are recommended anywhere from 150-300 mg of caffeine per day.  My delicious iced coffee is one of my favorite occasional treats that keeps me sane during the day and, believe it or not, it has less than the recommended 300 mg!  Thank you so much for your concern though!!"

They will feel like asshats afterwards and you might save some other pregnant women future hassles!

  • I have the opposite problem.  I am avoiding caffeine, and people are constantly telling me "You can have one cup of coffee."  Or they tell me that their wife (or whoever) drank caffeine all throughout their pregnancy, and their baby turned out fine.  Good for them.  I've had a miscarriage before, so maybe I'm a little gun shy.  It's my decision, and I shouldn't be criticized for being extra cautious.
  • I agree!!  I drink a cup of coffee a day and sometimes have a coke for lunch or dinner.  Luckily, I haven't had many comments, but even if I did I'd tell them to shove it!!  I don't understand the hype about caffeine.  If people choose to drink it or not drink it when their pregnant, than who cares and why is it anyone elses business?

I also get annoyed when people on here say they "cheated" and had a cup of coffee. It's not cheating if your doctor says its okay to drink some caffeine, so don't make the rest of us feel bad if we choose to drink  some caffeine every day!  If it's truly bad to have a cup of coffee every day, than I'm a huge cheater!

  • our babies are their business *rolls eyes*

This is right up there with the fewer but still many people who think that our bellies are now public domain and may be stroked on sight...aghhh!!! I had one coworker comment on my pop in the breakroom and I looked at him and said what is a dr. doing working at Home Depot??  The rest of the room laughed and that was the last comment made about my beverages...although one guy still asks me everytime he sees me if I'm eating my veggies....I tell him pizza sauce counts and roll my eyes again...like he has any clue what I eat....

I've slapped hands of coworkers (ones I am close enough to feel comfy doing this), crossed my arms over my stomach, and made many general comments on how rude people are towards pregnant women and nothing works w/ everyone....GL ladies!!

  • interesting. my boss commented on my caffeine intake when he saw me with an iced tea. i told him my dr. said it was fine, i'll take his advice.

but you know what else people have commented to me about?  I thought of this when i read the last comment about people feeling the need to tell you that it's ok to drink caffeine."you know, it's ok to have a glass of wine."

if i wanted wine, i would maybe have some. maybe. but i have no desire to drink alcohol right now. and i don't need you to encourage alcohol consumption. I'm cool.

  • LOL

Since when did being pregnant = random comment from stragers welcome.

  • LOVE IT! I got "are you sure you can eat that" all weekend from my grandmother about my choice to eat shellfish (in moderation).
"Normal day, let me be aware of the treasured day you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart...let me hold you while I may."
