Baby Names

Can we just name him Jack?

We love the name Jack for a boy, but I'm nervous giving that as the baby's first name, since I always thought of it as a nickname for John (which I don't like). I know in theory you can name the baby anything you want, but I don't want it to be like naming him Joe, Jim or Bob where it would be weird if that was your formal first name. What do you think??

Re: Can we just name him Jack?

  • Yes. You can just name him Jack.

  • Yes! My grandma's husband (not my grandpa) was named Jack. Just Jack. I'm friends with two guys named Jack. I like Jack a lot more than John too.

ETA: Don't use Jackson. I think that uber trendy name ruins the classic feel of Jack. ?

  • I like Jack, my cousin's little boy is just Jack.
  • I've never even heard of it as a nn for John....

You could always make it more formal

    like Jackson or something

  • Yes. It's not a "new" thing; my 80-year-old relative is just Jack Wesley, and his brothers had "traditional" names like Henry and Charles.
  • sure. I've never considered Jack just a nn. Plenty of people have it as their "formal" name. And I like it much better then Jackson that is so trendy right now.

  • Yes, Jack is my Dad and Brother's name.  It's a very normal/common name.
  • I think Jack is perfectly fine as a first name.  I actually don't like it as a nickname for John, doesn't make sense to me.
  • I think Jack can be a stand alone name.  If you like Jack just name him that!

  • My FIL's name is John, but everyone calls him Jack. So when DH and I decided to name our LO after our fathers, we figured we would just name him Jack Thomas, since we will be calling him Jack anyway!

DH hates names that have nicknames, so this is perfect for us - if we have a boy that is!

  • Absolutely.  I think Jack belonging to John is a thing of the past.  It can definitely stand alone!

  • I think Jack is a proper name in its own right. I know it traditionally is a nickname for John, but I think it has evolved. I agree with the pp that Jackson has a different feel than Jack... not as classic (although still a nice name).
