Why does it say "Caffeine Free"???

Okay I bought some rootbeer because I felt like having some soda and its caffeine free. I know we can have caffeine, but I choose not to. Anyway, I had two whole cans with pizza last night during movie night and I felt a little "awake" so I thought to myself "this is weird it feels like I had some caffeine". I grabbed one of the empty cans and in small print next to the nutritional value it says "Caffeine content 22mg". Okay, so there IS caffeine in there!! Why does the package say "CAFFEINE FREE" So now I think about how Ive been drinking this for about a month now and how mad I am that this label is a LIE. LOL LOL. Ive just read studies on caffeine and unborn babies etc. I know I can have 400 mg but its a personal choice to cut that out of my diet as well as all the other junk I used to eat. So today I was offered Sprite and I check the can first and it reads "NO CAFFEINE", with no other indication that it actually has caffeine. So weird huh? I guess theres a difference between caffeine free and no caffeine. I guess it must just have natural caffeine much like chocolate does. I know chocolate has very little caffeine:

Milk chocolateCaffeine

    • 1.0 cup chips has 34mg of Caffeine
    • 10.0 kisses has 9mg of Caffeine
    • 1.0 bar 1.55 oz has 9mg of Caffeine
    • 1.0 bar miniature has 1mg of Caffeine

but its caffeine all the same. Lets be realistic Im not giving up chocolate, so I guess I have been getting caffeine and Im fine with that. Just found this weird and interesting......anyone else notice this?

  • That is strange. I have also been trying to stay away from caffeine. I don't like any drinks with caffeine, however, I cannot give up my chocolate!

  • There's probably some FDA regulation that says that something can be labeled Caffeine Free if it has under a certain amount of caffeine in it.  It's like that with calories.  Something can be labeled Calorie Free and have up to 5 calories.

I didn't know that about root beer though and will keep it in mind.  I try not to have any caffeine except chocolate as well, and I will sometimes drink root beer if I want soda.  I don't really like Sprite, so I guess I will try orange soda (and get a giant sugar buzz!)

Orange Soda actually has MORE caffeine. I bought that too and it said 41mg. BOO!!!

ah I knew Barq's has caffeine (it says so in one of my pg books), but I wonder about the other brands...

Oh yeah - Barq's is known as the Root Beer WITH caffeine. Their motto is "Barq's has bite". I always assumed that was the caffeine. Mugg and A and W don't have the caffeine I think. Double check.

  • Not all root beer is caffeine free. For example Barqs has caffeine.
  • There are root beers that do have added caffeine to them.  Barq's (made by Coca Cola) definitely has caffeine (although Diet Barq's does not).  I think A&W may also add a small amount of caffeine as well.  Faygo, IBC, and Mug do not contain caffeine.

Good thing I do not have soda cravings very often.  Whoops.

  • This is one of those ridiculous FDA labeling restrictions, I think.  Like...low-fat has to have a certain amount of fat compared to the "regular" versions, and for "new" or "improved" the changes have to have happened within the last 6 months or something.  My guess is that Caffeine Free indicates less than a certain amount of caffeine per serving, whereas No Caffeine actually has to have no caffeine in it.

ETA: To the PP's about orange soda - I'm pretty sure Fanta doesn't have caffeine.  It's my lifeblood when I need a soda.  =P

  • I don't usually start craving when I read other bumpies' posts, but MAN, I want a root beer right now!

I was going to post something similar to this... "Fat Free" cookies are not free of fat. I have been having caffeine, not much but some, If i want coffee I'm going to have it but I never have more then one cup a day and I don't have much stuff with "hidden" caffeine anyway.
