S/O of paci posts. Anyone had to stop a thumb sucker?

DS still uses a paci for naps and bedtime, but a recent speech evaluation made it clear that it has to go.  I know all about the paci fairy and we're going to do it, but I feel so guilty taking it away from him when really he uses is just like DD uses her thumb - only at naps and bedtime for sleep / soothing.  It doesn't seem fair that he has to lose his comfort object and she's keeping hers just because it's attached.  Add to that that she asked me if the thumb fairy was going to come and take her thumb away...  Anyway, just wondering if I should try to make her stop or just let her continue.  If I should stop her, all tips are welcome.

  • I would leave her alone.  All day every day.. maybe I'd think of some kind of thing to encourage her to stop.  But just for sleep?  I think that's totally normal and nice.  I sucked my thumb at night until I was 8!

  • We took DD's paci away and she started thumb sucking. Both our ped and our ped dentist said to give it back to her. The paci will do much less damage to her teeth and we can break the habit later.
  • Oh and a paci at naps and night time is not hurting speech.
  • My girlfriend at work just weaned her daughter from thumbsucking--she started getting "manicures" with a bitter tasting nail polish. (meant for breaking thumbsucking)  Worked within 2 nights!
