2nd Trimester

Anterior placentas & movement

I found out at the big u/s this past Tues that I have an anterior placenta, which I know sometimes can make it more difficult for feeling the baby, especially from the outside. (I feel the flutters inside quite a bit)

To those of you who also have/had anterior placentas, when did you start feeling more noticeable and frequent movement, esp from the outside?

Re: Anterior placentas & movement

  • I'm curious about this too.  I also have an anterior placenta.  I have only felt some flutters so far and this is my first.

  • 23 weeks is when I started feeling her every day. I still have days where I only feel her a couple times though.

  • I started seeing my belly move from the outside this past week.  So at about 24 weeks.
  • I have an anterior placenta and I'm also a little bigger.  I still haven't felt him from the outside...
  • I know you won't want to hear this......but I am 24.5 weeks and I only feel the baby *maybe* 1-2 times a day :( It is SO disappointing.........I read a lot of posts where women with anterior placentas are saying their movement become more consistent/regular around 22-23 weeks or so.....and that isn't the case for me.

I honestly don't think DH will be able to feel this baby ever.....at the rate we are going, I can't see the movement picking up that much. In order for DH to feel him/her from the outside, the movement will need to be stronger and more consistent and right now that doesn't seem like its going to happen :(

With my DS.....I had a low-lying placenta that my OB said was laying a tiny bit anterior (whatever that means!) I did not feel consistent movement with him until 24 weeks and even then it was rare. My DH only felt him move a handful of times :(

GL! Wish I had better news for you......

Well as much as that's not great news, it will relieve my mind when in the next few weeks (when most people's movement becomes more regular) and I still may not be feeling much.

I try to just see the anterior placenta as a positive- extra cushion between baby and the harsh outside world.

  • According to my doctor I have a hard kicker because I have been feeling her move since week 17 from the inside and week 18 from the outside regardless of the anterior placenta. Usually its at the same time everyday but I am increasingly feeling her move more and more throughout the day.
  • I never felt "flutters", I finally felt kicks at 20W5D. I started feeling them from the outside at 21W5D. Now I always feel kicking, but still no flutters.
  • I had an anterior placenta with DD. I never felt flutters--just felt the first kick one day and from that point on.  I think I felt the first kick around 20 weeks, and DH and I were able to feel movement from the outside at around 23 weeks.

It may take a little longer to get there, but you'll feel plenty!  And see it, too!

  • I have an anterior placenta. I felt inside movement at 22w1d, and outside movement at 23w5d.

  • I also have an anterior placenta and the doctor said it could be 26 weeks plus before DH will be able to feel movement from the outside.  I have felt her kick since about week 19, but nothing on the outside yet.  I figure it will happen at some point for DH.
