Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

How long?

does it take for HCG to leave your system and how long after that to ovulate?

I am two weeks post D&C - took a preg test this morning and it was positive so I am assuming there is still HCG left from the pregnancy (we have not had sex since the D&C). My q is does this mine I will not ovulate until all the HCG is gone? when can I accept to get my period? When did you girls finally see a negative preg test after the D&C?

 TIA!

Re: How long?

  • I think you can still O while 'old' HCG is still in your system.  I asked my Dr about this and she said sometimes they cant tell if the numbers they are seeing are numbers from an old pregnancy or a new pregnancy, so that lead me to believe you could get pregnant before your 'old' numbers get to zero.  She said its easy to tell with a second draw though, you just wait and see which direction the numbers go to know if it's from the loss or a new pregnancy.

  • I'm not sure whether you O before your hcg levels go back to 0 or not, it could be.  I do think it is typical for a month or more to go by before you get af again.  6-8 weeks seems the most common, but I have heard of ladies on this board waiting as little as 4 weeks and as long as 11-12.  My doctor told me she would give me provera if AF didn't arrive in a month, but I waited until 6 weeks to call her and by then AF had arrived.

It does sound normal though that you'd still be testing positive on a HPT thought.  I'd give it another 2 weeks or so and then discuss with your OB if AF hasnt arrived.

  • 2 weeks post D&C I took a HPT and it was + so my Dr. had my HCG levels checked, they were at 35 that week, the following week they dropped to 13. That was last week. I'm hoping they hit 0 this week. I've read that it can take 4 weeks after your levels hit 0 for AF to show up. From the research I've done, generally you don't O but you "could" it just sounds like its rare.

I wasn't thrilled about having to take an HPT after my D&C but may take one next week just to see if my levels have dropped.

  • After my d&c it took one day shy of 6 wks to have AF.  I'm not sure about the HCG levels. I do know that the nurse that took care of me post-op at the hospital told me that another nurse working there that was pregnant got pregnant the first month after her m/c so soon that she never got her AF....so I'm guessing your hcg doesn't have to bottom out to get pregnant....but I'm not a dr.
  • My dr asked that we wait a full cycle before we start again, however he did say that people have gotten pg before that and then they have to do the HCG testing to date the pg.... just my 2 cents....
  • glad this thread is here.  i'm three weeks post d&c today.  yesterday i got what i know to be my ovulation pain in the side, and then had the discharge that i get that usually accompanies it.  i was thrilled and felt like i must be back to normal, but the ovulation pains were more severe.

i decided to take a HPT today, because i had heard that you can't ovulate when the hormone is still there, but the HPT still reads positive.  i did call my doctor today and am just waiting for a phone call back.  she hasn't done any blood testing post d&c - i asked her about it but she said they don't do it unless it looks like something's wrong, so i don't know what my levels are.  i actually only called her because the ovulation pains have lasted me quite a while and are still going, which they normally don't.   i'll let you all know what she tells me when i hear back.

  • I got my AF exactly 4 weeks after the d&c.  This is now my first cycle post d&c and I am ovulating right on track so it looks like things bounced back to normal fairly quickly.  I did not ovulate in the four weeks prior to AF though.  This is the first time I have ovulated since the m/c.  As far as hsg levels......it took mine 3 weeks to go back to zero.
