XP: Helmet moms

When will we get used to it?  It's been 3 days and they are crabby with them on and I'm still not over the initial emotionalness when seeing them in the helmets.  Please tell me this gets easier for all of us.

Also, was it loose when you first got it?  It seems like there is a lot of room in there for their heads to turn and wiggle.  I am forever readjusting x2!  I see kids in helmets in siggie pics and it looks like they fit tighter.

thanks!

Re: XP: Helmet moms

  • Hi mom!

It gets better. I was always told that its harder on the mom than the child, and its true. It takes a few days for them to get used to it. I always had a problem taking my kid out w the helmet. I'll be honest, for gatherings and outings I used to take it off. The problem w/ that is that it took longer to "fix" the shape, so I wouldn't recommend it.

I had to take my kid several times for adjustment. It used to cover his ears (not susp to) and it bother him so much. I saw a pic of a mom that had her kids helmet sprayed pained to look like a football helmet, it was awesome.?

    Gl!?

  • It takes a few days, soon it won't bother your child at all, just you! If it covers the ears or comes down over the eyes it needs to be adjusted. Also look for red rub spots - that's also a sign it needs adjustment.

I decorated my girls with paint pens - I made princess crowns and swirlies..they were very cute.

  • Only one of my boys needed the helmet. He adjusted to it after a few days.  I agree that it is harder for the parents then the child.  However, after a few days of wear it did not bother me.  Also, I don't have any problems taking him out in the helmet.  Some time people ask questions, but I think they are curious.  It is not as bad as I thought it would be.

My son has been wearing it for about 7 weeks and his head is already correcting. We see the plastic surgeon on the 10th of August and I have a feeling he won't have to wear it much longer after that.

     Again, it does get better.

  • Ok, I feel a little ignorant here.. but what situations or conditions cause the necessity for helmet wear?  Is this a relatively common thing?  Please enlighten me.. or I can go google.  Thank you.

If your baby has a "lopsided" head usually from sleeping/laying on their back and tilted-looking toward one side they may benefit from a helmet.  The helmet helps guide the shape of the head as they grow so it evens out.  Multiples are more prone to having this because there is a greater chance of torticullitis (sp?????) because there is less space in utero for them to stretch.  Sometimes a lopsidedness can be corrected through propping them to force them to sleep toward the unfavored side.

I propped but it didn't get better.  I was referred when they were 3 mths to a specialist.  He said that by 5-6 months if it doesn't correct itself then it prob won't.  Some insurance companies consider it cosmetic and don't help pay for a helmet.

Just be on the lookout for a flat or oblong shaped head and make sure you bring it up to your pedi if you have concerns.  The sooner they wear the helmet the easier it corrects itself.

  • Thanks for the responses ladies.  We have vowed to make them wear it all the time so we can get them off that much sooner.  I just have to get past my feelings about the whole thing.  We go back next Friday for a fitting check.

Thank you so very much for explaining.  I had the same question.

  • Yes, thank you for the explanation.  Much appreciated.
