Is your LO babbling?

I got asked if LO was babbling at the 6 month check up as in saying "ba ba ba" over and over again and my answer was no. She's now ~7 1/2 months and still no babbling at all and I can't remember what my other kids did.

Re: Is your LO babbling?

  • Nope! Lots of vocalizing, but no real consonants.

  • Yes, he's gabbin' but not annunciating.
  • He can do "ba" and "da" but usually only when something is in his mouth.

  • All the time. Mamamamamama when she is upset. Dadadadadada when she is playing. Bababababa. Gagagagaga. She likes to make a lot of noise
  • Yup. All the time.

  • Yep. Her first distinct sounds were blah blah blah, but she also says mamamama and dadadada. Yesterday she was making ha sounds

  • Yes, especially when he's in the jolly jumper.
  • Yes all the freaking time. He's either babbling, blowing raspberries, and squealing. When he's uspset he says dadada over and over, but he's starting to make that noise when he's happy as well.
  • DD just this weekend started saying "dadadadadada" and screeching.  She will be 7 months on Friday.

  • Yup! LO says lalalalalala and dadadada. No mamamama yet..sad. He likes blowing raspberries the best though.

  • Yes, raspberries are her new fave, or blowing her paci across the room when you put it in her mouth.

  • She was and then decided she liked to blow raspberries better so she's back to that.

My doctor got me worried at our 6 month appt that she wasn't babbling. She told me to spend as much time as possible making those sounds until she mimicked me. My mil is a speech pathologist so I asked her and she explained that the first sounds happen on their own and not really deliberately. She said they come from a closed mouth position which is why they come first.

So about a week later my daughter was upset and making an aaaaa sound when she started opening and closing her mouth and literally spontaneously started going mamama. It was so cool!! She even stopped being upset thanks to her new skill.

  • She screams mamamamamaaaa when she is angry or this weekend from not feeling good. She says bababa when she is being silly with her toys. Still no dada.
  • Oh ya tons!! Bababa and mamama and dadada all day long lol
She also tries to make the "p" sound and spits everywhere
  • Yes , dadada, nanana, mamama
  • A few months ago she started with mamamama and dadadadada, etc. She also was very into variations of NING!

She went through a raspberry phase about two months ago, but rarely does them anymore.

Last week we had lots of lip popping and smacking. Currently she's all about hissing like a snake. SSSSSssssssss over and over again is what I wake up to every morning.

But it's one of those things that babies do at their own speed. I think my girl was pretty early on making speech sounds, but she still doesn't give any indication that she's interested in crawling or even scooting. She's content to sit there and sing and talk. They'll all even out eventually. :)
  • DD does a lot of farting sounds... at the perfect times too. We will ask her a question about liking something or what she things about bedtime and she makes the farting sound. It's hilarious! She also blows raspberries, smacks her lips, some kind of purring sound. She hasn't put actual letters together besides bababa even though I say lala, mama, dada, etc all the time.

  • No. And my daughter was practically talking by this age so I have to admit it bugs me. I was just talking to my husband about it this morning. Lots of vowel sounds not many consonants.

  • Mostly vowel sounds here, except blablabla when she wakes up in her crib and is talking to herself. So cute.
  • Not really. He does this thing where he purses up his lips and tries to make what sounds like a B sound but then blows out air. I find it totally adorable.
  • Thanks for all the replies. I've been mouthing to her the babbling sounds in hopes of trying to get her to imitate me but no such luck. She started scooting at 5 months and full crawling right when she turned 6 so hopefully her focus is just on motor skills right now and verbal will come soon.
Good to see where everyone is on this though!

A lot of moms of girls (then boys) find this to be true too.
  • Yeah she was crazy off the charts with verbal so I always had an idea this was likely. I just can't help myself :)

  • Nope. Lots of vowels and vocalizing, humming, gurgling and grunting, but NO consonants. It is frustrating, I try not to get worked up over milestones but I can't help it.

  • One baby is (mostly mamamam) and the other just squeals. The squealer is more advanced physically, though. I'm not worried.
