Babies: 0 - 3 Months

what am I doing wrong? I need nap help!

I am trying to follow guidelines of HSHHC of following drowsy cues and timing guidelines.

Today he was up at 8 (slept in) and I tried putting him down at 10. He was definately drowsy. For 2 hours now he's just been playing in his crib, squawking, or flapping his arms and legs when I enter the room, crying when I leave. I tried feeding him since that usually knocks him out, but it didn't work.

This happened yesterday except I tried and tried and tried and then he became overtired. I shushed, walked, glided, rocked, shushed while glided, jiggled while rocked (you get the idea). He cried for 2 hours and 45 minutes. I tried feeding him 6 times, I used an infant soothie and a nuk. I put him in the mei tei, I tried the pack n play-turned on the music, I tried the crib since he sleeps well there at night. Finally he crashed but it was our worst day.

Since we've taken a break from bottles I wanted to get him back on them to prep to go back to daycare. He refused bottles all day long too (i nursed to keep him fed though) which probably added to the stress.I tried letting him CIO, I couldn't do it....he was coughing because he was crying so hard.

EDIT: I didn't let him CIO when he was hungry of course, but when I was trying to get him to nap.

If i leave him alone he cries. He is so tired.

WTH are you supposed to do if you spend 3 hours trying to get a baby to nap and he won't?

  • I can't advocate what you should/should not be doing b/c I've been blessed with a sleeper. I do have a question though.

When you say he's playing in his crib etc, etc.... do you keep peeking in on him to see if he's sleeping?

Often when we put DS down, drowsy but awake, he will play in his crib. I used to peak in on him and for us that was a part of the problem. Now I just let him do his thing and listen. He falls asleep every time. Only  when I finally hear nothing will I go in and check.

Wish I could help! Hope he  soon figures out that sleep is a good thing!

  • ok maybe all I needed to do was post about it b/c i just put the binky in his mouth and he was out....

Anyway this happens to us all the time! Is he a bad napper? Are your babies like this?

  • i would stop trying and take him out for a walk outside. isn't there a 4month wakeful period too?

    good luck!

It depends. If he's just playing (looking at his mirror or just plain flailing around) I'll peek in and he can't hear or see me. But if he's getting to that fussy stage just before crying I'll try to soothe him.

    Tried that twice yesterday too!

I was wondering about the wakeful. It could certainly be and I hope it is so that I have some sort of explanation. He usually sleeps from 8pm-3..eats, falls right back asleep and is back up for good anywhere from 5-6 (today was 8 am) Last night for some reason he was up at 11 and was starving. I hope that is it.

  • usually a walk or a drive will put our tired DD out- she loves the movement.

also, GL with the bottles. DD had no issues at the beginning and then we, too, took a break because BF was just easier. she's been refusing since 3.5mo now..though yesterday she did take an ounce of expressed BM. they say "just keep trying"..i have no advice!

i do this as well now. its too light downstairs in her swing for her afternoon and evening naps. so i put her up in our room (it is so dark in there) and she plays quietly and talks and then she gets quiet and i go check on her. she usually goes down within 15 min,

  • I don't have any great advice, but I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone.  Jacob is the same way.  Today he seems to be a good napper, but there are days when I feel like all I'm doing all day long is trying to get him to nap.  We're following HSHHC too and I'm hoping that a combination of his age and these techniques will eventually make a difference!

  • When we started nap training DS did the same thing. Crying and carrying on for a couple of hours.  Keep trying it will get better.  Sometimes I have found I may have put him down too early as well and he is just not ready for a nap.  I started documenting his schedule when he would nap and when he wake up eat, etc it really helped me see a clearer schedule.  GL
