Detergent rash

I did a bad thing. We ran out of our normal Maggie's Soap Nuts, and so, in a pinch, I used Bi-O-Kleen laundry liquid (which we use on our normal clothes, no problem). Most of the sites say it's ok, except can cause repelling in pockets (we weren't washing any yesterday). It doesn't have enzymes or brighteners or anything bad, but it did have some citrus. Within 2 diaper changes, her butt looked like it had a terrible sunburn.?

?

So, I'm running my diapers through hot water wash after hot water wash hoping to strip them, and she's got CA baby calendula on her nakkie butt right now. What else can I do, either for her or the diapers? Hopefully it will heal quickly and I haven't permanently ruined her or my (I mean, her) diapers. Help! I feel like a terrible momma.??

Re: Detergent rash

  • We just went through this a few days ago. Don't underestimate the power of Tea Tree Oil! We use it on our wipes every day, but when we got detergent build-up and C got a bad rash and we switched to disposables for a day, it cleared up very quickly. We just put 2 drops of it in a spray bottle (which holds about 1 cup of water). His butt looks soooo much better now. And we did use a bit of CA baby calendula cream too, especially towards the end of the day when some spots just needed an extra push.

  • Before I figured out it was the detergent that DS was sensitive to lots of naked time and baths always helped to clear up the redness.  I'd just be careful not to introduce any other thing to her bum, even things you normally use like soaps, lotions, etc since it could irritate it even more until it's cleared up.
  • i don't know if it's coincidence yet but putting vinegar into the very first cold rinse seems to be helping this issue for us.  I'm still investigating though.
