Washing Baby's Clothes

We've received a bunch of clothes from showers and such.  I know you are supposed to wash before wearing.  What are you all doing as far as this? Washing all of the clothes you've gotten or waiting until baby is closer to the age/size of the clothes before washing?

Seems like it would be a good idea to wait since if they don't fit or you don't need them, you could give them to a friend or something having a baby and they would still have the tags on?

Re: Washing Baby's Clothes

  • I washed all the newborn and 0-3 clothes. I left all the tags on the bigger clothes and put them in the back of the closet. I didn't want to wash everything and then feel the need to re-wash when it was time to wear it.

  • Do NOT wash them all!!! You will end up with too much of one size, or they don;t fir, or never have a chance to wear them etc. Just wash a few at a time and save reciepts if you have them to exchange.

I wish someone told me this with my 1st!

  • I didn't get a ton of clothes till after DD was born (we didn't know what we were having).  But the stuff I had I washed.  Now if I would have gotten a lot of clothes - I probably would have only washed a few things until she got closer to that size.
  • If you received a lot of clothes with tags and gift receipts, just pick a few that you really like and wash them.  I got a lot of used clothes from SIL plus new clothes from my shower. I left the tags on most of the new clothes just in case.  If I never use them, I might try to return them to the store for credit even if it was purchased months ago.

Pretty much did this. I washed a few things in the bigger size that I am for sure keeping.

This is exactly what I did too.

  • I washed it all. Don't get me wrong, my child has way too many clothes, but a lot of it is second hand so there is no returning and I won't feel bad if she doesn't wear it all.

I'm washing it all. Anything I don't use, I can just donate or give to somebody else I know is pregnant.

I have the newborn and 0-3 washed for now, but nothing else. LOs room is tiny, so I don't want to crowd his dresser and closet with larger sizes. Everything else is organized in bins in the basement and I'll wash as needed as he grows.
  • My mom, the biggest neatfreak/OCD lady in the universe, told me this past weekend that she never washed our baby clothes. LOL

Her logic was that she wanted them to be new and fresh when we wore them and not look like they'd been worn already when we first put them on.  Go figure!

  • I washed EVERYTHING (clothes, sheets, towels, any cloth accessories) and just finished my last load. My logic on the clothes: we were both big babies - I was 9lbs 8oz, he was 7lbs 10oz...and a twin, so I figured wash all the 0-3 and 3-6, have one washed NB outfit in the hospital bag just in case, and leave the rest of it to probably be returned. We didn't get a ton of clothes though.

  • I've bought a lot of little clothes from thrift stores and such, and I've washed all of those. That way, no matter what we get as gifts, he'll have some things to wear immediately. Then I can wait until he's born to return gifts that don't fit or that aren't quite our taste.
