GD mommies on bedtime insulin - what time do you take it?

I set a time of 10pm to take my bedtime insulin.  I usually can finally eat dinner around 6:30-7, so my last fingerstick is 8:30-9.  I eat my bedtime snack after that - usually around 9:30.  I wake up in the morning around 6:30.

The endo increased my units from 12 to 14 yesterday - and this morning my fasting was 96.  I just don't get it.  Does my timing look off?  I see my endo on Friday, so we'll discuss it then I'm sure.

Thanks in advance!

Sara :)

Re: GD mommies on bedtime insulin - what time do you take it?

  • I was never told that timing was an issue, I am just supposed to take my NPH right before I go to sleep (no set time every day).  It goes into "effect" 6-8 hours after taking it.  So if you sleep an 8 hour night, as you are, it should be okay assuming your dosage is set correctly.

I have found that I have to keep increasing my dosage daily/weekly on all my insulin because it gets harder to control the further along I get. This might be your problem.  I panicked when I started taking anything above 10 units, until I talked to my diabetes counselor who told me there are people on 70-100 unit dosages and my measley 15 or so units is fine.  You can't overdose on insulin, it is just a matter of finding out what works.  But like I said you might have to adjust it at any given day.

  • I took mine anytime between 9:30 and 10:30 (usually right around 10:00), woke up at 6:00 to test and never had any problems.

I'm sure it's nothing you are doing...

  • Try no to worry too much...I developed type 1 diabetes as a result of being pregnant last year.  As a result, I have learned a ton of information  and unfortunately become way too familiar with how frustrating this can all be.  I am now expecting our 2nd, as a full blown diabetic...so I get it.

As long as your fastings are under 100, you and baby are fine, your bedtime insulin will start to work somewhere around 2 hours after you take it, and peak 6-8 hours later...it doesn't necessarily matter when you take it.  Please feel free to ask me any questions..and hang in there!!!!

  • I had to keep upping my NPH until my fasting numbers stayed under 90, until about 28 weeks and then I had to decreased the number of units for 3 weeks and for about a week or so I have taken the same units every night. I just try to take a day at a time.

I take it around 10:30p-11p and i test usually 7:30a-8am. So far so good.

yes, sorry I did mean something else. What I mean't is to not be afraid to increase it if your numbers are high.  I know that you can overdose in the sense that your numbers get too low, I chose my wording badly.
