Yes, you have to have a full bladder but not so full that it is uncomfortable. My last ET I was in pain waiting so the RN had me pee some out. My RE doesn't have you lay there after ET. I get off the table and go the bathroom to change back into my clothes. I can pee right away.

your bladder should be 3/4 of the way full - at least that's what mine was. RE had me lay there for 20 minutes after the transfer, but i have heard of other people getting up to empty their bladder immediately after.
My RE requires a full bladder- my acupuncturist told me to not go overboard, because most RE's will be running behind and then you are just uncomfortable. I just had my ET yesterday and I brought a bottle of water with me and chugged it just as I was going in for my ET- my RE said my bladder wasnt really full, but he had no problem with my transfer. They have us lay down in recovery for an hour afterwards and I did have to go, the nurse just brought me the bed pan. Wow that was interesting!
Good luck!
Our Journey from two to three!
3 IUI's, 2 IVF's, decided to move to foster/adopt.
12/24/2009 Baby C born, 2/1/2010 placed with us,
5/17/2011 Adoption final- we are finally a forever family!
I haven't had my ET yet (I just had my retrieval today) but I know that my doc wants you to have a full bladder and they want you to lay flat for about an hour before you can go home.
After many years and tears our baby boy is finally here
My embryo transfer was done on a full bladder. But I was able to go and pee some out. It was hard. But I swear on that day I was able to do anything.
Beautiful Miracle Baby lost at 21 weeks due to pre-term labor and incompetent cervix. FET#1 BFN, FET#2 BFP, early loss. FET#3 BFN. IVF#2 BFFN. FET #4 BFP after removing bilateral hydrosalpinx and 3 months of lupron depot. Sticky Bun is here!!
Yes to the full bladder. I had to lay there for about an hour... I have a story about peeing all over myself in my blog. I could not get up - I had to use a bed pan.
They wanted me to drink 32 oz before my et. I checked in and I was given a jug of cold water and was told to make myself comfortable. Now I have a smaller than normal bladder and normally drinking 8 oz Im about to pee myself. I had to drink at least 20 oz before they'd take me in!
So there I was doing the pee pee dance before my et and I even said to the re "I might pee on you". After the et I had to lay still for 15 minutes! It was the longest 15 minutes of my life. As soon as that timer went off I wrapped the sheet around myself and flew to the bathroom!
I think they see alot of this because as soon as I opened the door and flew out the woman at the desk just pointed to the bathroom. Thankfully where they do the transfers is out back and quite private so it wasn't like I was running through a waiting room full of people.

It is my understanding that MOST docs require a full bladder for ET. However, mine did not for IVF #1.
I was asked to lay on the table for 15 minutes after ET last time.
One of my friends had to pee terribly so they actually had her use a bedpan after ET. I know it probably sounds mortifying but she said that by that point, she totally didn't even care and I believe her!
Yep, I had to have a full bladder. That was the hardest part for me - I had to lay there for 20 minutes afterwards. I did not appreciate that my DH was trying to make me laugh! I was offered a bedpan if, needed, but I waited it out.
you have to have a relatively full bladder. And I won't lie to you, having a full bladder while they're pressing down on your ute with an u/s thing and you've got a speculum up your hoo-ha is NOT comfortable, but it's relatively quick.
After transfer, my clinic has me lie there for 5 minutes, but as soon as the 5 minutes are up, I go straight to the bathroom.
Every time I've had a transfer, I've apologized in advance to the RE in case I pee on them, but thankfully I never have. But they always tell me that if I peed on them, I wouldn't be the first so not to be embarrassed.
After 5 years of TTC, 3 IUIs, 5 IVFs, 2 FETs, multiple losses and an adoption that wasn
I also have a weak bladder. I know some places tell you to drink like 24 ounces or more of water. I only ever drank 8-12 ounces and my bladder was PLENTY full. I had to pee some out every time. It was uncomfortable, but over quickly. I didn't have to lay there after transfer, I just about ran to the bathroom to pee and get dressed!
TTC with unexplained IF since 8/2007
6 losses, one beautiful perfect boy in our arms
When you go to have your egg transfer done - do you have to do in with a full bladder? They let me pee before transfer because I was so uncomfortable so I would say my bladder was half full.
How long to do you have to lay there after the transfer? One hour
Are you able to get up and go pee if you need too? I have a very weak bladder. Bed pan
Talk to your RE during your consult and voice your concerns about this. I know that when I have my practice ET and my new clinic I will surely be telling them the troubles I had last time I am sure they will work with me.
you have to have a very full bladder. i thought mine was full and they poured another 36-40 oz in me. after the transfer they catheterized me to relieve the pressure immediately, but i had to lie there for 20 minutes in an elevated position (head down, feet up). no peeing allowed if you want the dr's to be able to see what they need to see to perform the transfer.

This is simply not true. Makes it easier, yes. But we could all definitely see what was going on and my bladder was not full.
For my 1st IVF they made me have a full bladder, and it was so uncomfortable they had me go "a little"... which is very hard to just go "a little"...
For my 2nd IVF, new RE, he did not want me to have a full bladder and we could still see everything perfectly. I think it was so much better because 1) I could relax on the table and enjoy watching the embryos go in 2) when i had to do the required wait after the ET on the table, I wasn't crying bc I had to pee so bad.
My bladder is really weak also. Yes, full bladder. The first IVF I couldn't concentrate at all on our embryos because I was so fearful of peeing on the RE. The second IVF I drank less water - still had to go but it wasn't nearly as bad.
By the end of the 5 minutes I ran to the bathroom for all of my IVFs. DH tried to keep me distracted during the weight.
