Ok out of curiosity

I see a lot of people asking about boys names for girls and we're doing the same thing. The name we've picked out for our daughter is Quinn Piper R___. Does that sound too masculine? Quinn and Piper are both traditional boys names that are increasing in popularity with girls fairly recently and we couldn't pick one so we went with both. Does it work?

Re: Ok out of curiosity

  • That sounds very feminine to me. The only Quinn I know is a girl.

  • In my opinion Quinn sounds masculine.  I have never heard of it for a girl and I automatically think boy.  Piper sounds like girl to me.
  • I love it, I don't know any Quinns' or Pipers' but they both sound feminine to me.

I think it's awesome!  I love androgynous names, and especially ones that start with high-scoring Scrabble tiles!  DH shot down Xander and Zara, and we have a friend named Quentin, so... we're going with Charles or Harper.

Quinn is gorgeous, unique, but not weird; she won't have a class full of kids with her name, but there won't be a problem spelling it, either (another thing that our kids have in common, besides due date!)...

I also like how the initials are almost in alphabetical order!

  • Quinn is a masculine name.
  • Xander was our boy's name! Yeah I wanted something non girlie that you could pronounce correctly the first time. My name has been butchered since birth and I don't want to put my kid through that. LOL regardless of what people think, it will be Quinn Piper, I was just curious if the name Quinn popped up as masculine of feminine in people's minds. LOL

I think Piper definitely sounds feminine and I know Quinn is sometime used for girls (I only know males). I like it, but then I like boy names for girls. If our baby is a girl we plan to name her Tristen Marie.

  • Well, I know 2 puppies named Quinn and my DH's nephew is Quinlan so I guess it sounds like a boy to me.  I do like Piper though.  Have you thought about Piper Quinn???

  • I think Quinn is really pretty for a girl!  I think I would consider it myself if it wasn't already a close friend's last name.
  • I know both a female and a male Quinn (well, the woman is Quinn, the man is Quinlan, Quin for short).  LOVE the name, especially for a little girl!  And I think Piper is SUPER cute and cannot imagine it for a boy.  Great choices!!!
  • I love Quinn for a girl!

I second this.  I think it might be hard for her 1st day of school etc.  Kind of reminds me of my DH's boss named Kim.  I was really taken aback when DH introduced me to a man...

  • We did the research and Quinn has lost popularity as a boys name in the past 3 years. More Quinns in the 2 year old and younger demographic are girls (it will be like Laurie or Ashley were). We even googled the name and found almost all the Quinns with first names were female. Though it won't help if she has illiterate teachers like I did. I mean c'mon how is Brianne Brian? Really?
  • Quinn sounds more masculine to me just by default, but I do think it works well for a girl still.  Piper is definitely a girl's name in my book though.  Sooo... your combo works well IMO.  :)

  • Quinn may be a boy's name, but to me it is totally feminine... in fact i would never name a boy that. i think its perfect for a girl! and i've only met girl Pipers... i didn't know boys used that name too :) go for it!

Agreed! I think it's gorgeous for a girl, and actually only know one little girl with that name. No men.

If I didn't have my girl name I would consider Quinn Piper too! It's beautiful!

  • I think of Quinn as going either way and not particularly controversial - like Riley to me.

Piper is totally feminine in my opinion.

NMS, but I think it is a nice name.  I personally don't care for very masculine names (like Charles) for girls, but this seems like a nice compromise.

  • I think it sounds feminine... and very cute! I did know a boy named Quinn growing up, but I associate it more with a girl now because it's the name my brother and SIL would like to use for a little girl if they ever have one. And Piper, IMO, is totally feminine - makes me think of Charmed (of course!). =)
  • Both names are associated with girls for me.

  • The only Quinn I know is a man, so the name seems masculine to me, but I can definitely see it for a girls name as well.

Dunno if this was directed at me, but we're using Charles if it's a boy, and Harper if it's a girl...

  • Nope, just a general comment.  I picked a randomly masculine name that I saw recently used for a girl to illustrate my feeling it was a nice in-between sort of name.  Peter was another.  Just NMS, that's all.  Just as people who are like to name their daughter Charles or Peter are likely to think my names are old-fashioned and stuffy.  ; )
