GD/insulin - 4th meal

this is not something i normally do, but last night i essentialy ate a 4th meal... i'm on insulin w/bfast, lunch, & dinner and had no intentions of eating another dinner instead of a snack... but i was starving lol.

anway, my question is, for situations like that where i eat way more than a "snack" but have already had my 3 shots of insulin...should i have taken another insulin shot?  i left a message w/my drs office regarding this, but i'm curious if anyone else has been in this situation.

basically when i ate dinner we were rushed (on our way to birthing class) and i didn't have any carbs w/my dinner, so when i took my sugar it was really low for me (74, it's NEVER been that low), so we decided i could have some fries(a small fry) as a snack since i was hungry and didn't have any carbs w/dinner.  well that small fry turned into a cheeseburger happy meal (which was AWESOME by the way) and my sugar was really good this morning (87)  so at least it didn't scew up my morning sugar, and again i don't normally eat a 4th meal like that but it happened.

  • The nurse told me to take my insulin depending on my carb load for the meal/snack. I try to stick within my limits of allotted carbs but I do indulge once in a blue- especially when I'm sick of eating the same things over and over again and treat myself.

I was also worried about taking so much insulin and I questioned it and was told that it is totally safe for baby and me.

  • Odd that they discourage a 4th meal - when I was 16yo in diabetes camp we ate all the time (granted we ran around a lot, but still.)

We had breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bedtime. Ate right before bed. Shot for it all, great sugars the whole time!

I think the most effective mamagement for diabetes is to eat small meals, and often. Esp. when pregnant!! I'd challenge the Dr. on this...

  • If I ate a "dinner" with no carbs, I wouldn't count it as a meal. I have snacks with no carbs and don't count it as a snack... so if I had been in your situation I would have counted dinner as one of my snacks for the day and then the meal I ate later would have been dinner.

My OB also told me not to take any of the diabetes meds without eating at least a little bit of carbs. I took my glyburide one morning with only eggs and bacon (so no carbs) and nearly passed out. Scary stuff!
