Random thought on carseats and car wrecks

I know that if you are in a car accident and your child is riding in the carseat, you have to get a new one.

I assume even if they aren't riding in the seat (at home... not floating around the car) and you wreck, you should get a new one.

What if you are in a wreck and only the base is in the car?  Do you need to get a new base?

Re: Random thought on carseats and car wrecks

  • i would say yes, because that is the part that is providing a lot of the stability for the car seat.

also, most insurance companies consider the cost of the car seat and/or base to be part of the damage to the vehicle and covered in the claim.

  • I would think that if the carseat is in the car at all, it should be replaced. As far as the base goes, I'd like to hear what others have to say about it because I'm not sure. My guess is that yes, it should be replaced too...

  • I would!  I think of them like helmets.  DH was in a bad bike accident and even though his helmet was likely OK the first thing he did was get a new one!

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • I would assume yes, because I know for sure if the carseat itself is in the car even without a child in it, it needs to be replaced.  There are certain points that have to be met to warrant a replacement though.  I don't have the website handy but if the door closest to the carseat is damaged the seat automatically needs replaced.  It depends on how bad the accident was.  I probably wouldn't take any chances with the seat itself because it's the special foam and plastic parts inside that you can't see that can take the damage and those are the parts meant to keep our kids safe.

Honestly, it just occurred to me while taking a shower this morning.  No idea what brought it to my mind.

  • I used to work in auto claims, and the carseat only needs to be replaced if it was in use. It is the law in California that the seat be replaced if the child was in the carseat during the accident, no matter how small the accident.

  • Yes, you replace the carseat if it was in the car.  We had an accident earlier this year, and my son was not in the car, but the insurance company told us to replace it anyways, that it was now considered not safe, and they reimbursed us right away so we could purchase another one.
