I met with my obgyn about TTC yesterday. Earlier this summer i had surgery to remove blood clots in my legs that extended all the way to my renal (sp) veins. dr. said any pregnancy (depending on the cause of the clots which has yet to be determined) would be risky. if the cause of the clots is on one list, pregnancy is ok to go through with. if from the otehr list, having babies is a no-go.
obgyn said that i would be looking at (if its safe to concieve) giving myself shots of heprin (blood thinners) 2x a day.
has anybody gone through this??? is it safe?
Re: i'm new but worried ...blood clots
they haven't tested me for the cause of the blood clots.
do you have to do shots? where do you take them?
how are things going? i am so worried about this that i could just cry.
Yes, I have to do lovenox 2x a day in the abdomen about 3" either side of my bellybutton. They're going OK as long as I ice before and after. I do get some whopper of a bruise every now and then, but so far so good. I also take baby aspirin, 4MG Folic Acid, B-vitamins, calcium, and a Prenatal. I hate vitamins, but it's worth it in the end.
It might be worth investigating with your dr the cause of the clots. The MTHFR test is just a simple blood test. totally non-invasive.
I have a protein s deficiency which is hereditary and I'm borderline having to be on comadin full time. I had a PE about 4 yrs ago and a flurry of clots up and down my leg. I knew before I got pg that I would be considered high risk and have to do daily shots of lovenox (once a day).
Honestly, the shots are kind of a pain in the butt (or belly as the case may be), but they are doable and worth it. As for being high risk, the up-side is extra u/s on a regular basis. Probably the worst part is not being able to get an epidural as my dr didn't want me off the meds while pg and the meds don't mix but I also knew this going in and attended the Bradley classes which were awesome and helped so much during labor.
Don't know what has caused your clots but GL and I hope all works out for you.
Thank you for the reply.
i had to do lovenox shots into my belly when i first was discharged from the hospital. Besides that, have you had many complications? I read about clots forming in the uterus and things like that.
they havent tested me for a cause of the clots yet.
I found out that I have mthfr when i was 8 weeks pregnant. I had to give myself injections of lovenox everyday. I would have been switched to heparin at 36 weeks, because its effects can be reversed by another medication. With lovenox, you have to wait at least 24 hrs from your last injection to get an epidural.
If you do find out that you have a clotting disorder, you will probably be at a higher risk for pre-e. But that just means that you'll get more ultrasouds and have to go to the dr more often. I ended up delivering at 34 weeks because of pre-e, but my baby is just fine now. She spent 10 days in the nicu to gain some weight, and is now a thriving, happy 4 month old!
