24 hour urine question??

I posted this on the 3rd tri board too but I thought you girls might have more experience with it.  I started my 24-hour urine at 11am yesterday so I have about four hours left and my jug is full!!!  Can I just collect the rest in something else?

Just as a side note Im pretty confident that I do not have pre-e.  The only sign I have is elevated blood pressure only at the dr's office, at home its fine.  No swelling, no head aches or blurry vision.  But the dr I saw last week is a PIA.

Re: 24 hour urine question??

  • I never filled mine... I guess I would put it into a sterile container... I don't think there is anything else you can do... unless you can hold it for the next 4 hours!

  • Better to be safe than sorry.  I do have pre-e and elevated bp while sitting was my only symptom. My bp goes down when I lie down. I have been diagnosed for over a month and I still have no swelling, headaches, stomach aches, or blurry vision.  My 24hr urine had protein of 372.

I also ran out of room in the jug.  I told the lab that 8-12 oz. was missing.  I thought about using a different container, but didn't.  They really should give pg women two jugs - they can't be more than a few cents.  I have heard of several people who needed another, but didn't have one.

Good luck.  I hope you don't have it, but if you do follow the drs. instructions.  I am on modified bedrest and go to L&D twice a week for NSTs and bloodwork and mine is progressing very slowly.  I am now hopeful that they won't induce until 37-39 weeks (at first they were hoping I could get to 36 weeks- and I will be there on Thursday!).

  • I would call the doc.  Anything in your home will not be sterile so it won't work.  I was *close* to filling mine, but held off on the water a bit at the end so I wouldn't!

  • as far as it being sterile.  They are not sterile collections anyway so I guess I will just use another container.
  • I used a second container from home and they were glad I did... it's very important to send in the full 24 hours worth or the results won't be right.  The containers they give you aren't sterile anyway, and don't have any preservatives in them so it is fine.  If I have to do it again I will ask them to give me two jugs, though!

Ditto, I was on hospital bedrest and I had no symptoms (other than labs, bp, and hyperreflexiveness, all of which I would have never known on my own)  I thought all the doctors were crazy, and I was fine... even on the day I was induced.

  • I just got the jug for mine, I'm doing it tomorrow. It says to collect the rest in a clean dry sealed container.

  • Be sure to collect 24 hours worth. They will make you repeat it if you fall short. Use your own clean container. Good luck!
  • Wow, I didn't even come close to filling mine. I did it for 24 hrs but I was also sick so I didn't drink a lot. They told me if I filled it to just put it in a tightly sealed container also. HTH!

    ditto..

and ditto the other posters who did not fill their containers.. didn't come close to filling them, my protein levels were 1050 and 1350.  only after the first collection was I told I was 2+ by dipstick in the office, by induction (day after I got the second 24hr results ) I was 4+ on the dipstick.  the day I started the first collection I was told my dipstick was "fine." blah.  I did have a lot of symptoms.  but not everyone does. best to be safe and complete the test... a full 24hrs worth.

    good luck!
