A little background. I've had 2 mc's in a year. I started going to an RE recently. He started me on clomid and had my husband and I both get bloodowork. I have 1 copy of the MTHFR mutation, which they found in my RPL panel. They said it wasn't a big deal. Well my RE just called me and said my husband has 2 copies and he wants us to go see a hematologist. He made it sound treatable but did mention IVF. Could anyone shed some light on what is going on and what to expect with a hematologist? Does this always mean IVF?
Re: MTHFR...please help:(
I have two copies of the C677T MTHFR mutation- I was put on baby asprin, extra prescription folic acid and I am on the Lovenex injections (blood thinners) I started them when I started stims for IVF, I stopped right before ER and I will start up again after ET.
My DH was never tested- but we had to do IVF becasue of sperm issues, not because of the MTHFR- I was never under the impression that MTHFR had anything do with having to do IVF. Good luck!
I have the MTFR gene- it means that I can not metabolize folic acid and my doc just put me on a higher dose of folic acid. I also take baby aspirin (81 mg) a day to prevent clotting. MTFR can cause m/c because it is a blood clotting gene but easily treatable.
It doesnt mean you have to have IVF if you have it.
I've tested positive for heterozygous MTHFR A1298C mutation. I had a superficial blood clot years ago and was given all kinds of tests. My understanding was since I have 1 copy of the mutation and it's not compounded with C677T that my risk is low for blood clots and miscarriage. I also tested positive for heterozygous for the prothrombin 20210A gene mutation. I had numerous visits (mostly to repeat the tests) with a hematologist and after all the tests were concluded he said call me if you get pregnant and I may or may not put you on a blood thinner. He did advise to take a baby aspirin and that those 2 alone did not have him concerned. FYI, we figured out it came from my mother's side. My sister, mother, 3 aunts have had total 13 uneventful pregnancies.
Good luck.
