Lovenox girls - two questions

1 - How do you dispose of your syringes?

2 - What in the *world* am I doing wrong?!  I had Lovenox for several weeks after I was hospitalized last time (although they told me to do it in my arm then, and they're saying stomach now), and hated it every time.  I figured I must just have bad memories of that time, because so many people say it's no big deal.  Um - no!  It's just as bad as I remembered and I absolutely hate it.  The burn!

Anyway, any tips or tricks you've found that help

Thanks!

Re: Lovenox girls - two questions

  • 1. My pharmacy provided me with paperwork on where I can dispose of biohazard waste. I haven't done it yet because I'd rather do it all at once. It would be so much more convenient if the pharmacy (which is at my hospital) just took it!

    2. Ice, ice ice! I put an ice pack on the area for 20 minutes before to numb it, then 20 minutes after to prevent bruising. Ice had made ALL of the difference!

    Good luck!

  • Also, I used to avoid the sides of my abdomen because the residual pain prevented me from putting my hands on my hips, but I have found that that is the least painful place for me. I avoid my front because I'm paranoid I'll hit my ute. Plus, I have almost constant contractions, so that would hurt because it's tensed! I do mornings on my right and evenings on my left.
  • The lab where I get my blood drawn accepts my sharps containers.  I have not turned any in yet though.

It does burn quite a bit for me too. Some days it is more uncomfortable then other days and I have not figured out why.  I started injecting in my thighs in the morning and belly at night becuase my clothes rubbing against it during the day made it even more irritated.  It has helped a bit but now I am noticing that my belly is itching more and I am getting a rash if I scratch around the injection sites.  Just a bit PITA!  But I keep telling myself it will all be worth it!  Good luck to you!

  • They told me just to bring them in the dr office. So I either take them to my OB or myHemo. in a glad container

  • 1.  My dr just told me to pop the safety seal over the needle part and throw away in regular trash.  They definitely got the side-eye on that one... but I do it anyway.

    2. It just plain sucks.  I had it full pg last time and will be starting in 2 weeks this time.  Change areas as much as possible, ice, and remember it's not forever and for a very good cause.  I try to stick to the sides and would pinch the skin loosely.  Gotta admit that was the one time I was happy to have "extra" around the middle.

     GOOD LUCK!!
