2nd Trimester

Someone asked me about hummus and pregnancy...

I posted in another thread about drinking during pregnancy about how I couldn't wait to eat hummus and someone asked why wouldn't I eat hummus.

In all the "safe eating" guidelines for pregnant women here in NZ it says no hummus.

So I did some research and found this summary:

Tahini is sesame seed paste and used as a base product for many Middle Eastern spreads and dips. It is also used by itself and as a flavour enhancer in dishes. It is a high risk food due to the risk of contamination during processing. Tahini products do not normally receive a heat treatment to inactivate pathogenic bacteria; hence it is critical to ensure they are free of Salmonella.

This Rule covers tahini or crushed sesame seeds or any foods containing them (including sesame seed paste, sesame paste, sesame seed butter, hamas tahini, tahina, tahine, tahineh, halva desert mix, hummus, halawa halva, helva and babaganoush).

So it seems that tahini free hummus is ok?

  • I have never heard that about tahini before to be honest.  It certainly isn't on any warning lists in the UK.

I'm guessing any imports might have issues but locally/mass produced products would be okay?

  • well, so far so good with me. Everything is developing fine on my baby and I LOVE hummus.
  • I just had some hummus this weekend, never heard that one before. I think I'm going to continue to enjoy my hummus.?
  • Ugh. My dr never said this, I never heard it and I've eaten a ton of hummus and all is well with my LO.
  • Hummus is my go-to need an instant bit of protein snack.

It's not on any of my watch/warning lists.  Thank God.

  • I eat hummus daily!
  • I just bought a huge tub of hummus...my nuttritionist recommended I eat it as a snack with veggies.  I'm paranoid about the food thing, but I think I will continue eatingn the hummus.
  • I've never heard anything about hummus being an unsafe food for pregnant women to eat. But it doesn't matter to me anyway because I've had an aversion to it since early in 1st tri. Sad

Sounds about as likely as the soft serve ice cream thing...

I guess I just refuse to operate in fear 24/7.

Exactly. I wouldn't stress over eating hummus.

  • Waaaaay overthinking that one.  I've eaten hummus a billion times during this pregnancy and I'll continue to do it.

  • I've had hummus a few times since becoming pregnant... never thought about tahini or anything sesame not being ok, nor have I ever ready anything that says differently and I have read at least 7 books on pregnancy so far.

  • Yea I think whoever made that up is worrying waaaaay too much.  If any hummus was contaminated with salmonella, the FDA would pull it from shelves and I am sure you would hear about it. Salmonella is bad for everyone, not just pregnant people.

If you avioded everything that had a slight possibility of being contaminated  you would not be able to eat.

I went to Jason's Deli this weekend and *gasp* I ate hummus AND soft serve ice cream Surprise

  • I agree you don't want to worry all the time, but there has been salmonella and listeria found in Tahini imported to NZ, so Kate isn't crazy. My friend made hummus the other day with toasted sesame seeds and Greek yogurt and it was amazing!! Highly recommended.
