3rd Trimester

Kingston is here!!! PIP and birth story

Kingston arrived at 9am this morning weighing 7pounds 7 ounces and measuring 19 inches long.  His due date was tomorrow, so the little guy was kind enough to come a day early!

I went to dinner with my parents, two sisters, and DH on Saturday night.  When we got to dinner the contractions started at about 10 min apart.  As the night went on they went from 10 min to 8, then to 5-6 min apart lasting about 45 sec to a minute.  DH and I called my OB on the way home.  He said that I didn't sound like I was in enough pain to be in labor, but to come into the hospital to get checked out.  I have to admit that I knew they were contractions, but at the moment I wasn't in an incredible amount of pain.

DH and I ran home to pack our bags.  While packing I thought that I was peeing my pants so I ran to the bathroom.  I sat down on the toilet and there was a huge gush of water.  I made DH come in the bathroom and inspect what was in the toilet to make sure that it wasn't pee and that I wasn't losing my mind.  When I stood up there was more water and I continued to leak the whole way to L&D (and that entire night, too).

By the time I was set up in a room my contractions were 2-3 minutes apart and SO PAINFUL.  The nurse checked me, but I was only a finger tip dilated.  I've been a finger tip since my 38 week appointment, so I was a little discouraged in hearing this.  I tried to tough it out and labor through the pain, but I wasn't making any progress and the pain was becoming unbearable.  At around 1:30am I got my epi and it was fabulous!

DH and I got some sleep that night.  At 5am I was checked and after laboring for a whole night I was only 2cm.  The nurse started talking about starting me on a Pit drip if my labor didn't pick back up.

At around 7am I told the nurse that I was feeling a lot of pain and pressure.  She assumed that maybe the epi needed a boost, but decided to check me first.  Amazingly enough, I had managed to go from 2cm to 10 in 2 hours!  She was so shocked that she had to get a second opinion... and a third.  Turns out that all my son needed was the threat of pitocin and he was out of there.

After pushing for 1 and a half hours his head was still "right there", but it wasn't making any forward progress.  The OB first tried to manually stretch me to allow Kingston's head to pass through, but he wouldn't budge.  The OB decided to use the vacuum instead of doing an episiotomy.  With his help it was just 4 more pushes and Kingston was out!

I always thought that I wanted them to clean him off before putting him on my chest, but I'm so glad that they just threw him on me.  It was so amazing to hold him for the first time regardless of how bloody he was.  After checking him over they gave him back to me so that we could try breastfeeding for the first time.

I did tear in the front and had to have a few stitches.  It's not as painful as I thought that it would be.  But holy hemmies!  Ugh... I'm scared of how badly it will hurt to poop for the first time!

We can't believe how beautiful he is and we feel so lucky.
