High-Risk Pregnancy

~~Bed Rest Mama's Friday Check In~~

Hope everyone had a great weekend... Thinking maybe we will have a baby from electricdoctor83 this week!!!??!

Please let me know if anyone needs to be added or removed, or if anything about your status has changed. Also, I am newly on bed rest so I will do a QOTD but since I had not previously participated - there may be a repeat of questions you guys have done before...

Here goes!

Here is a list of nesties who can commiserate together during bedrest. Nothing better to do, right? Share your story, progress, news, and any ideas of how to keep yourself busy. Check in will occur each day on the High Risk Pregnancy Board in the mornings.

Post back with your info if you?d like to be added to the list!

QOTD: I have no question for today. I am mentally drained after my appointment today and cannot think of one. Feel free to tell us anything interesting or on your mind... If someone else has an idea for a QOTD, please post it. Hopefully my mind will be back to normal by tomorrow....

Re: ~~Bed Rest Mama's Friday Check In~~

  • Update:

I had my growth scan this morning. Our appointment was at 8 am. It lasted 3 hours. All is well, but that ranks up there are some of the worst hours of my life. One of the OBs did the scan and a med student was in there, I think part of the problem was she was not the best sonographer. She went over, and over and over my baby. She was completely silent the whole time and would not answer any questions. She said the attending MFM would meet with us afterward. She "finished" 3 different times and went to the attending, only to come back and say she needed more. Finally she brought a sonographer with her and I guess she got the job done.

Taking that much time and going over things really took it's toll on me. The 2nd time she came back and started again - I lost it. I honestly felt like I was going to have a panic attack. I started bawling... She was like what's wrong... I said, I just want this to be over. She kept looking over her heart, head, lips and spine. I kept imaging this poor baby girl with all sorts of problems....

In the end, the MFM said she looks good. She is measuring ahead, which makes sense cause I have always felt like they have my due date off. They say she is 2lb 9 oz. which is great cause when I had Ethan at 27 weeks, he was 1lb 13oz. The fluid on her kidneys has actually increased, which is a bummer - but all we can do is keep a watch and see what happens. I am still not overly concerned with this.

They gave me a break and did not check my BP after this appoinment. I know it would have been up there. He told me to go home and relax for a bit and let him know if it was high this afternoon. It was up there when I got home but I think it was from being up and about as well as lying there worrying for 3 hours. Luckily I am not doing another growth scan for 4 weeks.... I do have a fetal echo a week from Mon.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Ugh...growth scans are supposed to be at least a little fun since you get to see LO but yours just sounds stressful!!  She could've at least talked to you during it and told you what she was looking at, etc.  3 hours just seems absurd!  Can you mention this to your dr. next time you see him?  I would want him to know the people he is referring you to.

On the bright side, LO is measuring at a great size!  Try and relax and I will be hoping your bp goes down after such a stressful morning.

I would love to go to fiji or some other beautiful island with over water bungalows.  Realistically this probably will never happen or it will be a long time until it does bc of price..  I would also love to visit Australia one day.  I have only heard good things about it and would love to see all it has to offer.

Italy, Ireland, Germany, Greece. There are lots of places I would want to go... Right now I would settle for Myrtle Beach, SC!

  • ilvmyfireman- I know, I usually like the ultrasounds but this one was way too stressful. I am completely exhausted now. I am glad she is measuring ahead and that everything else looked good. I had an appointment next Fri (OB) and then one on Monday (echo) and I switched to have both on Monday so I have a whole week without appointments next week. I was a little nervous about that at first but now I feel like the less I go, the less I stress. I know what pre-e feels like and will know to call/go in if need be but I am hoping for a laid back week.....

The MFM/High Risk OBs work in conjunction with the Comprehensive Fetal Care Center (where they do scans) so they are really all there together. It is at a teaching hospital so you see lots of different people but they all report into my doctors... people are learning, I guess. I am just glad it is over.

Sorry to hear about your scan today. ?I know that I personally look forward to these because the bigger he gets, the better I feel and I look forward to seeing him swimming around in there. ?3 hours is an extremely long time for a scan, I'm surprised a doc didn't just go in there and get it done, obviously something was wrong with the student/tech if they need to constantly go back and take hours of your time. ?I've had that happen where the tech doing the measurements has had to go back and forth on a scan, and at most I was laying there for a half hour, and then when the scans don't look right, the doc just goes in and takes care of it and walks me through the scan as well as why the doc is having to go through it again for my benefit and then to also explain to the student/tech. ?

Baby sounds like she is growing really well - just remember how happy you were when you reached your milestone week this week! ?Everything with the scan was okay, so you don't have to stress. ?The increased fluid in the kidneys can come and go...I've had it happen, and then it goes down the following week. ?Maybe a nice treat of ice cream can help...that always cheers me up. ?:)

?QOTD: ?My husband and I have always wanted to go to Europe together. ?He's been many times with his family there, but I have never been. ?One day. ?

The vacation theme made me think of this...the week before my May doctors appointment we went on a trip to Yosemite National Park. ?We booked a four night stay at the Ahawanee hotel in the middle of the park so that we can do all our hiking and nature walks near the hotel without having to drive very far to look for scenic spots (we figure a half nature - half hotel relaxation experience). ?I was 22 weeks at the time. ?When we were driving up (about a 6-7 hour road trip with stops), we noticed that the weather kept getting wetter and wetter as we got closer to our destination. ?We were hoping for sunshine because, who wants to be hiking in the rain? ?Anyway, the hotel was great, restaurant was great and thats about all that we got to do because of the rain (with exception of a half hour here and there when the rain let up and we got to stretch our legs outside for a little walk about the hotel grounds (beautiful water falls and deer and other animals just walking around with you). ?The following week I had my doc's appointment and we discovered that I had IC - badly funneling cervix, only 1cm of cervix left closed and 1cm dilated. ?Someone was watching over me with that rain that week before when I couldn't hike and do all sorts of exploring in the woods. ?I can't imagine how we could have gotten help in the middle of the park had my cervix burst open and I went into PTL. ??

I agree, someone was definitely watching over you during that vacation! Isn't it amazing how we notice these things when we look for them?  I know it happens more often than we realize, but when I realize things like this it always makes me smile.

So true - At first we were so disappointed that we didn't get what we wanted out of that vacation because we figured it would have been our last trip until I gave birth. ?And the following week when we found out about my IC, we just looked at each other and shook our heads at just how lucky and blessed we were. ?I still shudder at the thought of what could have happened had things been different with the weather. ?Sometimes the miracles are in the small details and we're very thankful. ??

Isn't it amazing how that happens?  I was 25w6d when I went into the hospital with my abruption.  We were supposed to leave on our road trip from Phoenix to the OC/LA to visit my brother and my friend the very next day.  All everyone kept asking was, "Aren't you glad you weren't in, like Blythe when this happened?"  Blythe is a town on the AZ/CA border with only a few thousand people.  I was damned glad it didn't happen there.  I spend my whole vacay in the hospital and have been on bedrest ever since, but I have never been more glad to have not been in the car.

Update: I am done with my steroid shots.  The baby looked great on the monitor.  About 20 nurses rubbed my belly today.  It was fun.

QOTD: There are so many places DH and I want to go!  I want to go to a zillion places in Europe.  I want to go to Australia and New Zealand and Fiji and Bora Bora and back to Hawaii and Tahiti.  I want to go to Egypt.  I want to go to China and Japan.  I want to go to a bunch of places in South America.  I want to go to Alaska.  DH thinks I would like a bunch of places in the Maritimes of Canada.

Mrsjrmiller-- I can only say what I have done in the past.  I am not a great sonographer.  I can get good pictures of the belly, head, heart, and femur to get a weight and presenting part.  That takes me ten minutes or less, and I always talk through what I am doing because everyone wants to know what I am looking at.  Everyone worries when you are silent.  When I was an intern, it took me maybe 45 minutes to get the same stuff.  They've taught me to do more stuff, like brain measurements and kidneys, and special heart things and diaphragm and aorta now.  Once you get into a routine (or if you use a cheat sheet, like me) it takes 30-45 minutes.  It should take no more than an hour unless you have a 300 pound patient.  Then it shouldn't take that long because you just can't see anything anyway.  I always like to point out what I see, probably because I'm as happy to see it as the parents.

You should have been given an explanation as to why it was taking so long.  Of course you got upset.  I would have been upset.  Anyone would have been upset.  I am not sure why the ob didn't get why you were upset.  3 hours is ridiculous.

Some docs aren't talkers.  I probably talk too much.  I am super chatty and casual.  Some are super formal and clinical.  Others are silent and then give you info at the end.  I don't know which is right.  Everyone has their style they're comfortable with.  And I've had patients totally not be receptive to my style and go with my colleagues who were more of the other two, and that's fine too.  But I think when you are stressed and looking at something like an ultrasound and you know something is already wrong, feedback is so important.  I think the others are right in saying you should mention it to the perinate.  yes, it's a teaching institution, but you can always request to have your scan done by a sonographer and not a fellow or resident.  I always did my scans after the sonographer while they were inputting data, so that way it was like fun bonus time to see the baby and good learning for me.  Or they were on ladies who dropped into triage without prenatal care, but we don't talk about them.  You can always make your preferences known, and they will be respected.  It's not worth the stress of having that happen again just to be a teaching guinea pig.

  • I'm in LABOR!!!!  Hip hip hooray!!!   I went to my appointment today and I was a solid 4cm+ like I was before and we scheduled an induction in case he didn't want to come on his own (since I had such a favorable cervix too) for 39 weeks.

Well, on the way home I started cramping really bad and my back was killing me so we decided to walk the mall for a couple hours before we went home in case I started to contract.  I really didn't think I was in labor but when I was checked in triage I was 6 cm.  I went from 4 to 6 cm without even knowing it and I don't think I had many contractions at all.

Now I am waiting for my contractions to get together closer and stronger, otherwise they are going to start pitocin.  I am just waiting!

The end of this dysfunctional pregnancy is in sight and it is freaking AWESOME!!

(I'll update on 3rd tri board too as I can)
