North Carolina Babies

wraps/pouch slings/ring slings

So many choices out there! how can you choose what's right for you? I'm a plus size mommy that would love to carry the baby.  I have a bjorn that I used with DS1 but couldn't use it until he was a certain weight and honestly it wasn't very comfortable for my back.

What would you recommend?  TIA!

Re: wraps/pouch slings/ring slings

  • I love my Moby and it is great for larger sizes also.  DS hated the newborn cradle hold but loves sitting in it now and I have never had any issues with back pain, but he is still smaller.  I don't see it being an issue though because of how is weight is distributed.  I am wanting an Ergo now for when he is bigger though after all the talk on here lately about them :)

  • I loved my Moby too when DS was a newborn.  We used it constantly until he was 3-4 months old.  At that point, I switched to a mei tai (BabyHawk) and later I got an Ergo.  The Ergo is awesome!  It should work pretty well for most sizes too.  My Dh is 6'4" and broad and he loves to wear the Ergo too.
  • I'm a huge wrap fan.  Stretchy wraps (like the moby) are what most people like for the newborn stage.  I prefer woven wraps since they are more supportive and can be used for back carries as well.  Wraps are great because they fit all sizes and you don't have to worry about adjusting them.

Most mei tais (like the babyhawk) can be made with longer straps if you need the extra length (babyhawk has info on their website).  I'm pretty sure soft structured carriers (like the ergo) can be adjusted but I don't know as much about those.
