Question - slightly medical related

So, Liam's pinky toenail is hanging on basically by the nail bed.  I need to remove it before he catches it on something and rips it off.  Any suggestions on the best way to do this?  Keeping in mind he is a wiggly 14 month old and I am home alone with him all weekend.  I am thinking I may try clipping it off with nail clippers.

I'll post the story about how this happened later.

  • Ouch! Cutting finger nails/ toe nails is the absolute least favorite part of mommy duty in my book! I usually try to distract grady with something usually its a video and a little choc milk.  Good Luck!

  • Does he like tequila? I'm leaning towards getting him so snockered that he passes out and then use the clippers. Works with the cats every time. ;-)

  • I would try clipping it off.  To do Natalie's toes/finger nails, I also have to distract her by turning on a Baby Einstein or something.

  • Is the entire nail about to come off or just part of it? If it's the entire nail except the base, I would wrap his toe in gauze so he can't pick at it and just let it fall off naturally when the new nail grows out. If the entire nail comes off, sometimes a new one won't grow in. The old one keeps the nail plate open so a new one can come out. GL. . .nail injuries in kids are tough b/c they pick at them and are so wiggly.

  • Rach, I just say this post on the Boston board:

    iTunes visualizer.

She's frozen in her jumperoo (rare...she usually bounces like crazy) just looking at the screen, me, screen, me.....

For the interested, I'm listening through U2's No Line on the Horizon album.

I think I'm going to have to turn the visualizer off soon.  It's a little too baby-cracky.

    and someone else responded:

We use the visualizer to keep J still long enough to clip his fingernails. :P

  • Thanks ladies.  Bobsbride, yes it's the whole nail right down to the nailbed.  I think I'll try to clip off some then and leave a little bit to hold the nailbed open - I don't want him to lose his pinky toenail.  Unfortunately, he's become masterful at removing bandaids, and his little toe is just so tiny it's hard to keep anything on there LOL!

Sounds like a good plan. You can always put tape over the bandaid and then socks. It's tough. . .kids are so curious an pick everything off. My strategy with them has been to put on many layers so they don't get to the bottom one. GL!?
