2nd Trimester

26 Weeks - Baby's movements changing

I am 26 weeks along and our baby has been pretty active since 19 weeks.  Around 23-24 weeks I noticed the kicks and movements got a lot stronger.  However this past week, I've noticed the movements have really changed.  The baby seems to be not so much kicking but stretching from side to side.  Also I find one day he/she will be really active and then really quiet the next.  Our baby always used to seem wide awake around 10 p.m. and again first thing in the morning.  On Monday night baby was really quiet (very little or no movement at all) despite drinking cold water, laying down, etc. and remained quiet until I was at work on Tuesday morning.  It was quite un-nerving (sp) as baby has never been quiet that long.  Then yesterday baby was quite active again and then really quiet last night and is still quite quiet as I write this.  I'm hoping the yogurt I am eating will wake him/her up.

When did your doctors tell you to start monitoring their kicks/movements?  26 weeks or 28 weeks?  I am a little worried that our baby doesn't seem quite as kicky as he/she used to.  Would you call your doctor or am I over reacting.

TIA

Re: 26 Weeks - Baby's movements changing

  • I don't think that you're supposed to start kick counts until after 28 weeks.  If you're concerned though it can't hurt to just call the nurse and ask your questions.  I'm sure your LO is just fine though.  Maybe just worn out the day after being so active?

  • Around 26 weeks I noticed a decrease in movement as well. I was told to start my kick counts at 28 weeks and believe me by that point he was back to moving around like a maniac.
  • I could have written the first part of your post.  I've also noticed a big change this week in the type of movement I feel. Not nearly as many little kicks and jabs as a head (or butt) pushing against my belly. My girl's favorite time is 10am and 10pm.

I'm not sure about monitoring kicks yet...I go back in 2 weeks though, so I should ask then.

  • I would say as long as you feel LO, you're fine. Baby is getting bigger and doesn't have as much room as he had before, or perhaps he's just having a lazy week (like we all do). I look for my LO's patterns, too, and get a little unnerved when he's not following them from one day to the next, but as long as there is movement I don't know that i'd worry too much.?

If you really want piece of mind, definitely call your doc! That's why you pay them so much! GL, and your bump is swoon-tastic.?

  • Our LO moves alot one day and then barely moves the next. They all do it. If you are worried, call your dr. Kick counts start at 28 weeks.
  • My babe has her busy moments and then naps for awhile.  She's active every day for the most part.

  • It's so weird that you posted this because on Monday LO gave me a scare. She hadnt really moved all day and after I tried everything she still wouldnt budge. Up until she had been very active everyday. So, right as I was on the verge of tears she moved for me. It wasnt a whole lot of movement, but enough to make me feel better. I asked the doctor about this and they told me at this stage (I'm 25 weeks today) it is still perfectly normal for LO to be really active one day and not the next. They told me to start kick counts at 28 weeks at which point LO is bigger and doesnt have as much room to move around in and you start to feel every thing.
  • My doctor said to not worry about it till 28 weeks.?
  • I wouldn't worry about it, as long as you feel the baby every day.  I agree that the type of movement has changed.  It used to be individuals kicks/jabs and now I feel streching, shifting and multiple kicks/jabs.
  • baby is running out of room in there, so you may feel him or her less...
  • Wow I just went through your post myself! LO had been super active for a couple weeks but then starting last Wed or so and for the next couple days, he went almost quiet. I could still feel tiny movements but nothing like they had been and he wasn't responding to the normal stuff that makes him go. We were going away for the weekend so I called my Dr (and felt really dumb the whole time) and she suggested I could go get a stress test but I decided to just wait it out and that night he was back on track!!

My doctor told me at my appt at almost 24 weeks that I should feel movement every day. Nothing about actually counting though.

  • Mine changed this week too.

He'll go spastic for about 30-45 minutes and then quiet for a couple hours and then it's party time again.

They're getting bigger, so I would think at this stage, they still have room to move so you'll feel more than what you have been.

  • I know this is old now but I have noticed a decrease in movement as well.  I ended up calling the nurse to make me feel better and she said prior to 28 weeks if you are feeling 10-15 movements/kicks per day that is normal.
