When do I need to be concerned about NOT gaining any weight?

I'll talk to my doc about it next week, but I have yet to gain any weight during this pregnancy and I'm still wearing my pre-PG clothes. In fact, I'm down a few pounds. I know everyone's different, but I keep hearing about women who have gained 5 or 10 pounds by this point and been in maternity clothes since the middle of the first-tri. I'm eating what I can, and I'm guessing I'm hitting at least the 1,800-2,000 calorie per day mark, but I'm still battling food aversions and the occasional case of morning sickness. Plus, I get full so fast. I'm trying to eat a balanced diet, but it's been tough since nothing sounds good. I'm not eating a ton of junk, but I am guilty of mainly eating carbs. DH is worried our baby is going to come out addicted to bread and graham crackers.

Also, do y'all have any advice for dealing with m/s? I eat as soon as I get up, but halfway through breakfast several times a week I'll usually have to run to the bathroom. It's so frustrating because, like I said above, it's a struggle to eat sometimes, and then I have to start all over again.

Re: When do I need to be concerned about NOT gaining any weight?

  • my experience was similar. I did not gain any weight. when i was 9 months preg i actually weighed 20 lbs less then pre-preg. I was overweight to began with though. I also had horrible m/s for 5 months. Being preg really kicked my metabolism into gear too. My doctor was never really worried though, as long as I was eating. I think around 7 months she told me to start on the milkshakes bc I was still losing weight, and she didn;t care if i didn;t gain, she just didn;t want me to lose more. Your doc may feel differently though. GL!

  • It's normal to not gain any weight in the first tri, and a lot of women lose weight. It's during the second and third tri that you should start to see some weight gain, but if you're still having m/s, then it may not happen right away. I wouldn't worry about it yet.

  • I don't think you should worry yet. ?I can't remember exactly, but I know I didn't gain much or show for a long time I remember finding out the sex of the baby (so about 20 weeks) and I was barely showing and in mostly pre-PG clothes.
  • i remember asking this question to everyone and no one ever had this problem (it seemed), but me!

i didn't start gaining until after 20 weeks.  i did seem to lose some weight at first as well. (i kind of wondered if it was because i wasn't drinking anymore? Stick out tongue )

i'm tall, so i thought maybe it had to do with my height.(i'm normal weight--i walk alot)  my doctor kept saying not to worry, but it was hard for me not to with all my previous miscarriages.

i started gaining weight finally around 5 months, but still not as rapidly as most people.

i just want you to know there are a few pg ladies out there like you--there is nothing wrong with you!

oh, i didn't have morning sickness more of an evening sickenss.  i had a hard time eating in the evening and definitely no chicken or much meat.  so i ate more for breakfast and lunch. i just tried to eat when i could--sometimes i had to remind myself because i wasn't hungry.  i ate alot of toast and cereal and i bought fruit and left it in plain view so i would remember to eat it.

    hope this helps you!

  • There's another mama on this board who offered me a lot of encouragement when I was in the worst part of HG/morning sickness hell who delivered 5lbs below her prePG weight because she had been so sick.. and her daughter was a big, healthy, beautiful thing.?

I lost nearly 20 lbs in the first half of my PG before I started gaining, and then it seems like my body has been trying to make up for lost time! I have gained back every pound I lost and then much more.

One thing my doctor and the ladies on this board kept reassuring me was that your baby is getting what it needs, YOU are the one suffering. I had a hard time believing that for a while since I literally went weeks without eating solid foods.. but sure enough, at my 12 week ultrasound, when I was already done quite a bit of weight, Baby Girl was measuring a week ahead, and she has consistently measured right on track with that.

The most important thing is to stay hydrated.. if you can't keep breakfast down, don't force it. Just sip fluids throughout the day. My OB rec'd Ensure drinks or V8 / V Fusion drinks to be sipping something with a bit more substance. You can try that in the mornings if you want.. see if its easier on your stomach.

    Hope you feel better soon!?

  • It's totally normal to not have gained any weight at this point - especially with morning sickness! With DS1 I didn't start gaining until about 16 weeks (and then rapidly started making up for lost time!). With this pregnancy I've only gained about 2lbs so far, and I'm 21 weeks.

As long as the baby is growing on track and your doctor isn't worried, you're totally fine. I remember being really concerned and confused about this too, with my first pregnancy. Try not to stress out too much. Just keep eating as well as you can. Everyone's body deals with pregnancy differently :)

  • I haven't gained any weight either(well 2 lbs, but I attribute that to stopping working out.) My belly has actually gotten smaller(but firmer) the last few weeks, but I attribute that to th bloat going away

  • I wouldn't worry too much right now.  I just had my 20 week visit and I was up 7 lbs total.  At my 16 week visit I had only gained 2 lbs and my dr wasn't worried at all.  She actually thinks I have probably only gained 4 lbs total, but due to eating chinese food the day before my appt and retaining a ridiculous amount of water I am now down about 3 lbs.

I can't eat at night.  I am really hungry at lunch and manage to eat breakfast, but nothing sounds good for dinner.  I find myself either drinking a few big glasses of milk or having a yogurt smoothie.

I know it is hard not to worry, but just keep eating what you can.

  • It took me forever to gain with Rhett  - definitely past 20 weeks. Then I gained so slow. I would be in tears in the doctor's office and they would assure me that it was fine since he was doing fine. He always measured ahead. I did eventually gain 20 pounds, all at the very end of the second trimester and then throughout the third trimester. He weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce when he was born.

I did not gain in the first tri this time either, but picked up after that. I was really nauseous until 16 weeks this time, so that certainly affected it. Don't worry about what you are getting down right now. You can worry about eating more varied foods in the 2nd and 3rd tri. Just eat whatever you can to settle your stomach now.

  • I was on the small side pre-PG, then I lost 12# in the first tri.I eventually got back to pre-PG weight around 24 weeks, but I was showing and obviously PG by 15 weeks.

Because of my weight when I started and how much I lost, my MW put me on exercise restriction (I had been running ~20miles/week until I was too exhausted) and I started drinking Muscle Milk to maintain my weight.

Hadley obviously grew just fine, but I was on the verge of underweight for a NON-PG woman, which was concerning for my health.

I did finally gain 18# by the time I delivered, and I had no other complications.

I had a similar experience. I was really sick into 2d tri and lost 11 lbs. I only gained 9 net lbs total and my dr was fine with it (I was overweight to start though.)  I can't say enough good things about zofran for m/s (and bad things about insurance for rationing it so ridiculously).
