Infertility

Just spoke with my nurse..

She didn't call back until after 6:00! And of course I was driving home so it was hard to write stuff down. But she had the results of our tests yesterday. DH's second SA showed his morph to be even lower than his first (1st-9%, 2nd-7%) and it still showed a lot of WBC even though he was on augmentin. I know it takes 3 months to re-generate but it is still disappoint to see that it went down. :(

She said even though I really don't have AFand my spotting was so light and short, they are still going to consider yesterday CD1 since my lining was so thin. So at least I'm still on track to do my Clomid Challenge this cycle. That's a positive I guess..

She also said my estradiol and FSH were normal...she said my estradiol is 48 and my FSH is 11.4. I think she said anything lower than 100 is normal for estradiol and anything lower than 12.5 is normal for FSH...does that sound right? Like I said I was driving so I'm hoping I got this all right.

I'm all set to have my HSG next Tuesday. I really hope the results from that are good...that would be the first and only good results we've gotten really.

Any thoughts on my levels?

Thanks ladies :)

  • I thought that FSH values were supposed to be lower than 4.5?

  • ugh... sorry about the SA results.    i know it must be disappointing!!!

as far as your tests go...  did you have those done on CD3?    or not?     were those this morning, so CD2 if we count the spotting?    your FSH looks a little on the high side to me (i've always heard doctors like to see it under 9 or 10), but it sounds like your CDs might be a bit iffy this cycle?

when will you start the clomid?     good luck!

(ps... i am not going to be around much the rest of the night, but if you want to talk more tomorrow, just find me!!!   i know all of this is pretty overwhelming.    hang in there!)

  • Oh no...really? Just when I think *something* is good...

I may have gotten it wrong but I did ask twice...this nurse is a bit flighty..I really wish the other nurse had called me back. Or any of the other nurses really.

Today is techinically CD2 I guess. I went in yesterday only to have them do a follow-up ultrasound to see if my cyst had went down. I took my last real BCP on Friday so they said they exepcted to see a flow yesterday and since I had spotting in the morning and thin lining...they'd go ahead and count yesterday as CD1..even though I've had no flow. This seems wrong to me...but what do I know...

So these levels were taken on CD1 not CD3. I start Clomid on CD5.

I guess I'll be calling back tomorrow to double check the numbers and try to get a better answer.

    UGH!

  • "Good" FSH levels are <10.  Most RE's consider FSH to be "OK" if it's under 15.  However, >10 is still elevated and would indicate that you are headed down the path of dimished ovarian reserve.  Depending on your age that could be totally normal.  How old are you?

  • 11.4 is a very high FSH for a 23 year old.  It is certainly a surmountable obstacle.  But it isn't nothing either.  If your FSH is really that high and your RE is telling you that is "normal" for your age then you need to RUN elsewhere and find someone who will treat you appropriately for DOR.

Wow...I'm so confused as to why they'd tell me it was normal. I really don't know that much about it but could it have anything to do at all with the fact that my test was done on supposed CD1 which really isn't a true CD1 since I still don't have any flow? Anything to do with just coming off BCP?

I'm sure not...I'm sure I'm just reaching here...

  • FSH does change throughout your cycle.  That said, I honestly don't know how big of a difference CD 1 versus CD 3 (normal test date) is.  What I do know is that as you age your ovarian reserve dwindles.  Which means your pituitary has to put out more hormone to make your ovaries do their jobs.  So, as you age your baseline FSH goes up.

I want to stress that an FSH of 11+ is not an insurmountable obstacle.  In fact, there was a girl in my May IVF buddy group on Fertilty Community who got pg (on her first IVF) despite having an FSH of 13.   However, having an FSH >10 is not normal for a 23 year old.  Indeed it liekly means you should be moving toward IVF ASAP and not wasting time Mickey Mousing around with IUIs and whatnot.

I hope I'm not scaring you.  That is the farthest thing from my intention.  At the same time,  I think it would be a great disservice to you to sugar coat this and act like it's not something that should be playing a significant role in your decision making.
