I'm a GENIUS! Cheap and easy alternative to Diaper Genie (etc)

The Diaper Genie costs about $30 and then another $6 for each refill (that holds about 160 diapers). I got one as a gift for my first baby but after using it for about 4 months, it became such a hassle (yes, I'm lazy) that I gave it away.

Instead, I buy boxes of store brand "ziplock" sandwich baggies and put poopie diapers in those. A box of 120 baggies only costs about $1 and I think it's so much easier to just put a diaper in that and then toss it in the trash. I'm pretty sure it reduces the amount of landfill waste compared to using a diaper genie type system. Plus, a box of baggies takes up a lot less room in the nursery than a diaper genie.

    I have the diaper genie upstairs but use something like this downstairs - but I get them cheaper at the Dollar Store:

    We use these bags too at home and while we are out. I like that they are scented. And for 9 bucks you get 250 sounds good to me! Plus I use them to keep dirty clothes in incase he spits up or something while we are out.

    Great idea! I just throw mine in the regular trash because it has to be taken out all.the.time. I gave my genie to SIL because she's expecting twins, but that is a great idea!

    That's a great idea! Sasha is staying with my parents and ILs for a few days next week, so I think I'll just tell them about this.

    I'm glad you solved your stink problem, but I'm curious about how this is LESS landfill waste.

    How is 250 diapers a month + a regular trashbag + ziplocs less landfill waste than a 250 diapers a month + a genie trash bag?

    What am I missing?

    I wondered the same thing.  But it does solve the stink problem.

    I try yo be open minded when people tell be they are using disposables but how exactly are you reducing landfill space when you're adding more plastic?

    btw, we got rid of the stink here by NOT using disposables

    I keep a garbage with old grocery bags as the liner by her changing table. Pee diapers get thrown in it along w/ other trash. If we have a poopy diaper it goes in the same bag & gets thrown out once a day in the outside trash. Reuse of bags, no stinky, no money spent.

    When we used sposies we just used a small bathroom sized trashcan and emptied it every other day.  We never had stink.

     

    Am I missing something?

     

    Another issue with teh ziplocks is that they are typically thicker plastic than a trash bag, so you are probably throwing a lot mroe plastic into a landfill with our method.
