Success after IF

No longer get anything when I pump...

I try to pump in the evening when DD gets a bottle of formula from DH, but I no longer get anything from the pump- I would get more if I hand expressed.  DD is always full from me, its just the pump that gives me nothing.

I have the Madela manual pump, and I have changed the valve and the membrane, so its not the pump :(

Any suggestions? or has this happened to any of you?

I don't need the breastmilk then, if I would get some I would just use it in DD's cereal instead of formula.

Re: No longer get anything when I pump...

  • Hm... So, do you mean that you used to pump in the evenings and DID get something?  Is this a change?

  • Exactly- I used to pump while DH fed Lily and then he would give her that breastmilk the next night, but then I gradually got less and less and we introduced formula for that feeding.

It has no dropped so much that I can barely get an ounce, but if I nursed DD she would get a full feeding... it seems to just be me not responding to the pump anymore...

  • Wow, interesting. Do you think it might be better to just hand express for awhile?

I also don't know how long you want to keep pumping for, but if you could rent an automatic pump that might help too. I guess it depends on how often you use it though : for just once a day, I might just go to hand expression.

  • The only thing I can think of other than pump malfunction is that you could be about to start your period - have your cycles returned yet?  Mine returned at 5 months pp and I always have a sharp drop in supply in the week + leading up to it.

  • i hope when it's over you'll get more from pumping.  i work FT and have to pump twice/day and don't always get as much as we need but we make do.  it helps that i nurse him on my lunch break.  sounds like you nurse almost full-time, so that's great!

  • I still do nurse all feedings except for her last one before bed... although sometimes I do feed her and we don't give her formula.   I am not sure yet when I am going to start to wean her...  I am on Mat leave until January, so I have no idea when I should!
