Trying to Get Pregnant

To tan or not to tan?

Well, I usually tan in the tanning bed about twice a week and I am wondering if I should continue even though I am about to O. Does anyone have a suggestion? I didn't know if it could cause me to not get pregnant. Thanks

  • I haven't heard of it causing women not to get pregnant...but I have heard that it causes skin cancer. Just sayin.

  • You're supposed to avoid activities that can raise your core temp while TTC... so it's reccomended to avoid things like Bikram yoga and tanning as it can mess with ovulation.
  • Tanning like that is so bad for your skin. The damage you do now takes years to show up, but every sun tan adds to wrinkles and decreases skin elasticity. Just say no to tanning!!!!!!!! Pale is the new Tan!!!!!

  • As a skin cancer survior I beg you to please stop tanning.  I was diagnosed at the age of 30 and have horrible scars from my surgery.  It's never safe.

  • As an RN on an Oncology floor (cancer)...I beg you...please dont tan in the tanning bed (or outside for that matter!). I have seen too many cases of not only melanoma, but also melanoma gone too far (i.e. spreading to lungs, brain, etc.) Think Izzy on Grey's Anatomy. That stuff really happens! All the time!

I know this isnt the answer you were looking for, but as an oncology nurse, I cant let this one slide without a comment. :-)

  • Thanks for caring. I am going to stop and hope that helps because I can't tan while I am pregnant so no point in doing it now.

Not so much for TTC, but for the prevention of skin cancer, I would stop.  I would be more worried about getting sick than anything.

  • Tanning = stupidity you might as well chain smoke! Seriously with the info out these days why on earth would you go and give yourself skin cancer? You do realize there are many forms of skin cancer, not just melanoma? Like basal cell, squamous cell while these take years to kill you they will disfigure you like lose your nose!!! I dont think you will look so hot with a snap on nose!
  • My friend was diagnosed with melanoma at 22-it's bad news. It was gone for a few years and now it's back. Find an at home solution that works well for you.

With all due respect, I think you're missing the point.  These ladies are not telling you to stop tanning because you won't be able to when you are pregnant.  They are not telling you to stop because it may help your fertility.  They are encouraging you to stop permanently because it is in the best interest of your health.

  • Who cares WHY a person stops doing something bad for them? If she is going to stop now because it may affect her fertility, hopefully that will break her addiction to the endorphins it releases and she'll be able to quit forever.

I was addicted to tanning for a short while. I couldn't sleep right on the days I didn't go to the tanner. I have always had SAD but it was SEVERE when I quit tanning. I was so low for a long time because I wasn't feeding my body those endorphins that are released when you tan. I stopped going because I was too poor to buy minutes anymore and it shook me awake. I went through withdrawals because of it. Luckily I realized what it was for me and I stopped even thinking about it. Now the only sun I get is from my house to the car and into work. I wear a HUGE hat outside and slather up the sunscreen like crazy.

Because it can make a huge difference.  A friend of mine who is a smoker had to go into the hospital for an extended period of over a month.  She was unable to smoke during that time and had broken the routine and the dependence on nicotine.  But the problem was that she never really WANTED to quit smoking, she HAD to.  Once she was out of the hospital and back on her feet, she started right back up again.

It all depends on the mindset going in.  I would hope that the OP would want to quit tanning for her own health, rather than for the ulterior motive of hopefully getting pregnant.
