What was your most memorable/favorite baby gift?

What was the most memorable and/or favorite baby gift that you received? Some friends of ours did not register anywhere (I'm sure they received LOTS of hand-me-downs from family members) and I'd like to get them a very nice gift. Should I go for something like a nice personalized blankie? Make one of my frames? Any other ideas?

TIA!

  • A harmonica that was over 100 years old that was handed down from my great grandpa, to grandpa, to my dad. My dad mounted it in a shadow box and wrote on the b ack who it had belonged to, with their birth and death dates.

  • His AngelDear lovie. Didn't think much of it at the time (other than it was soft and cute), but he refuses to sleep without it. With it he self-soothes, plays and sleeps through the night.

It's now my de-facto baby shower gift. For $10, I'm happy to add it to my purchases in case it helps another baby the way it's helped ours.

  • With Carter, I loved personalized pacifiers with his name on it, and for a while there, that was my go to baby gift.  Then I had anti-paci Spencer and realized what a ridiculous gift it was since you never know if a kid will take one (or if the parents are anti-paci or whatever).

Since then, my go to gift (and favorites that I received with both kids) is burp cloths with their names embroidered onto it.  There are a ton of vendors on Etsy, but I usually use this one (since that's where I received my gifts from, and liked them - the boy ones are cuter than the girl ones)

For families that are having #2 or #3, or if I just know they will have everything, my other favorite gift that we received and go-to is personalized family notecards with everyones name on it.  I received and like these (and get the folded notes)

  • BTW, I put those ideas out there for others looking, but for YOU, you should definitely make a frame!  Those are awesome, so creative, and anything handmade is so special!  I just have no handmade talents, so I have to out source.  :-)
  • I love handmade stuff - Char got a few blankets.

My mom also gave her an opal ring that her mother gave her (all are Oct babies) that she received from her uncle...Charlie (how weird is that?)

I love personalized stuff from etsy.

And books with the kid's name in it.

Also, a nice outfit from Gymboree, Janie & Jack, Gap - not necessaily a dress, but a going out outfit.

  • make a frame!

for Lexi my favorite gift was a blanket started by my great grandmother and completed by my grandmother.

For Orion it was a silver star necklace i recieved. special because he is my little star. :)

  • My favorite gift was an awesome, super soft bathrobe that someone gave me. All the other presents for E, but this one was for me. It was nice to know someone thought of me. The bathrobe is great, and came in handy during bfing and midnight feedings.
  • The baby quilt we reciced by the same person who made mine 20-something years ago.

This!!!  Someone gave me a fluffy bathrobe at my shower and I practically lived in it the first month of DD's life, lol.

  • Already have something in mind for mommy, but I swear it's harder to get something for the little one!
  • the ladybug bedding that my sister made herself - a bumper set, crib sheet, diaper holder and a 4 pocket organizer.  she's the true martha stewart of the family ...

anything handmade gets props from me ... for close friends/family i cross stitch baby samplers provided that i'm not encroaching on any cross stitching grandmas Surprise ... or some other baby related thing. my niece has a dallas cowboys huddles blanket i xstitched for her (her dad is the BIGGEST cowboys fan known to mankind) and another friend's daughter has 2 hooded towels that have xstitched octopi w/ bath bubbles and bath brushes on the hood.

eta: i found the pics !!!! *of the handmade ladybug bedding that is*

  • Maybe I'm a freak but I'm not a huge handmake gift girl. I got one blanket at my shower. It's sweet and nice, but it's not the stand out gift for me. Maybe I'll feel differently later on. :)

  • We received a couple of handmade quilts. One is from DH's great aunt, who has made a similar one for every single baby in his extended family for the past 4 decades, and Kyva's has some of the same fabric as DH's, which is now 31 years old. The other is from my BFF's mom, who was like a 2nd mom to me growing up. She made it completely by hand, without a sewing machine, and it's absolutely gorgeous. She made us a large one as a wedding gift too and I love it.

ETA: the 2nd one I mentioned is the backdrop in my siggy pics.

  • so far I love almost all the gifts I have received. I especially love anything that is soft and made locally. There is a store in Oakland, called Ruby's Garden that has locally made clothes. Also I got some stuff that is bamboo, and I love the feel of that.

My absolute favorite is a cashmere baby blanket. My friend has a good friend that makes this stuff and it's way expensive, but my friend is a designer and I think she exchanges some services with her for a discount. At least I hope so, She had one too and LOVED it.

  • Her grandma crotched a blanke for DD. It was touching because it was handmade and she has RA(rheumatoid arthritis). I'm sure that made it harder for her to make it and just can't believe she made it in the first place. I cried when she gave it to DD because I had no idea she had been working on it.
