High-Risk Pregnancy

IC & Bedrest???

Hi everyone! I thought this board would be the perfect spot to post a question! When I miscarried at 15 weeks, I was told it was due to IC. We are TTC this month, which if it happens, the baby would be due in April. Anyway, I teach so that would be a perfect time!

My question is, do most people with IC end up on bedrest??  If so, how do you handle that with your job?  I would feel so guilty not being at work, even though I know it's out of my control.  Anyone a teacher and put on bed rest during the school year?  I'm such a planner and just thinking ahead!  Thanks!

Re: IC & Bedrest???

  • I am currently on bed rest for IC. I found out at 24 weeks that I had an IC. I started having some early contractions and went to the Dr. They checked my cervix and it was "short" so they put me on bed rest. It has been almost 8 weeks on bed rest. I have another 4 weeks and they will take me off at 36 weeks and then they said I can deliver whenever he decides to come. I won't lie, it has been really crappy and SO boring. I have to lay on my left side during the day and drink more water than you can possibly imagine. I know it will be worth it in the end when I get to meet my son. I'm praying the next 4 weeks so by fast so I can start being mobile again. I've had some problems with restless legs and cramping so I will be glad when I can walk around again. Best of luck to you Smile

  • With DS, I was on bedrest. However, it wasn't discovered until 23 weeks when I was also having pre-term labor. I got an emergent cerclage at 23w3d because my cervix was very short and funneling. I was on bedrest the rest of my pregnancy. I am a school psychologist and went out very suddenly, so I know how you feel:). I felt very guilty about going out so early and wasn't prepared for it, but I dealt with it. You just do what your doctor tells you do to.

This time around, I am getting a preventative cerclage at 14 weeks and will be taking precautions for preterm labor as well. My perinatologist is being very proactive about this pregnancy. As of right now, no bedrest after my cerclage. I would imagine I would only need it when and if my cervix started shortening and/or pre-term labor started up again. Good luck! Oh, and this time around, I could care less if they take me out of work early...different perspective I guess, since everything turned out so great last time:)

  • I was diagnosed with IC at 16.5 weeks.  We put in a cerclage the next day and I was on bedrest for 8 weeks until I delivered.  Unfortunately our twins only lived 3 days.

Before we TTC again (I need to do IVF) we are placing a trans abdominal cerclage (TAC).  It is supposed to be very strong and prevent cervical shortening again.  My IC was an extreme case hence the TAC placement which I will have at the end of August.

A lot of people with a preventative cerclage end up on bedrest either as a precaution or because it makes them feel better (makes them feel like they are doing everything they can).

  • I would imagine that you would have a preventative cerclage placed early in your pregnancy to prevent another loss. I had an emergent cerclage placed at 18wks when, at my BIG ultrasound, they saw I was dilated 3.5cm and rushed me in for surgery....I've been on bedrest for the past 12 wks with another 4 to go, when I'm off at 35wks and the cerclage is removed at 37. My Dr said that in my next pregnancy she'd put one in at 13wks with fingers crossed fot no bedrest. I also had to leave work suddenly and was horrified as I'm a nanny and was leaving them high and dry with no notice! It's all worth it and I quickly got over it!! Good luck! =)
  • I was diagnosed with IC @ 23wks. ?Cervix was very short, and funnelling w/ only 1cm of cervix left partially closed. ?It was too late to get a cerclage, and so I was forced to go on strict bed rest (only potty breaks allowed). ?I started with terbutaline and magnesium pills, steroid shots to help develop lungs early, and weekly trips to the docs with NST monitoring. ?It was a huge surprise/adjustment, as I only just started creating a transition plan at work, and never had the chance to implement them due to sudden bed rest. ?I had to suddenly research disability and other benefits I never planned relying on. ?It took about two weeks to get down to a routine. ?But after a while you become an expert at what you need at your side to limit/prevent the need to get up. ?Movies, books, naps, puzzles, phone time with friends, online shopping for baby gear among other activities has kept me sane. ?

We're at 33w1d now, and off terbutaline, but still continuing on strict bed rest. ?I was given the promise by doc that at 35 weeks I'll have more vertical time. ? We never thought we'd make it this far. ?Our baby boy is estimated at 6lbs. 15oz. as of yesterday's doc appmt, so we're happy with his development. ?Just 4 more weeks till 37 weeks...one day at a time.

    Best of luck to you!?

  • I lost my daughter at 21 weeks due to IC. ?So next time around I'll be putting in a preventative cerclage. ?MY MFM said moderate to no bedrest may be necessary. ?But I'm planning to take a leave of absence from work and just put myself on bedrest. ?There is no way that I want to chance another loss.
