Pittsburgh Babies

Where did you/are you giving birth?

My OB delivers at West Penn hospital.  I know nothing about that hospital - most women I know who've had babies recently delivered at Magee.

Anyone deliver at West Penn? What did you think?

Re: Where did you/are you giving birth?

  • I did on 2/12... I loved it.  The nurses were all wonderful and I had a really good experience.

  • I delivered at West Penn last May and I loved it. The staff was very warm, the accomodations state-of-the-art (very recently remodeled). My sister delivered both of her sons at Magee and while Magee is nice, I found my accomodations equal if not slightly nicer and the staff warmer. It may sound silly, but at Magee (where I recieved most of my prenatal care) since babies are the majority of what they do, there doesn't seem to be any real joy in the delivery of babies, whereas at West Penn, babies are a treat. Okay, I sound like a loon.

Anyhoo, West Penn offers tours of the maternity ward to help new moms get aquainted. Like you, I was nervous, but once I saw the whirlpool, squatting bar and the rest of the delivery suite it was replaced with excitement. SSL

  • I love West Penn.?
  • I delivered at Magee and it was ok. The only thing is that they push for the pain meds so.  If Angel did not have her heart issue, I would have delivered at Westmoreland and I liked it there much better. For the next time,it's going to be Magee but I do plan on having a doula for the next one so.

  • I delivered at the Birthing Center on Penn Ave. in the strip district. It was the most wonderful experience I could have imagined. Regardless of where you deliver, make sure you write a birth plan (pain meds preference, what you want to be able to do like walk, use a birthing ball, etc., and whether you plan to breastfeed...if so, say you want your baby with you as much as possible and as soon as possible). Have your OB sign it and include it with your charts so that anyone has access to it on the big day.
  • I will deliver at Magee but I had a friend recently deliver at West Penn and she had a great experience. Good luck.
  • I'll be delivering in Westmoreland Regional in Greensburg.  West Penn is great though.  I was there for my nieces birth and my brothers girlfriend has both of her children there.  They were really great when i was there.

  • i worked at west penn and DO NOT reccomend it.
  • I delivered at Magee and while I love my OB (Dr. Whiteside), the majority of the nurses were less than stellar.  Their computers were down my entire stay and they lost a vial of my baby's blood which had to be re-drawn, among other issues.  I know they are supposed to be the tops for maternity care, but I was less than impressed!  The best thing about my stay at Magee was the hospital food -- seriously delicious!  :)
  • We will deliver at West Penn. My cousin and sister in law both recently had there and it worked out really well. My cousin also works at West Penn so I certainly trust her opinion. Smile I was a little bummed at first because my Mother had all of us at Magee but my doctors only deliever at West Penn and they are all so wonderful that I am ok with it.

  • I will be delivering at The Medical Center in Beaver. I don't know much about West Penn except that a friend of mine delivered 3 months early at The Medical Center and her little peanut was taken to West Penn.  She said the staff there were very friendly and helpful.  (Last I heard he was doing well for being 3 months early)
  • I will be delivering at Sewickley.

Cranguard, I'm really not trying to be mean, but I live seconds away from the Beaver Medical Center and from everything I learned about it before getting pg (and since!) I looked for another practice that delivered somewhere else. In part it had to do with exactly what you're talking about- babies with issues are always taken away to somewhere else and I felt more comfortable delivering somewhere that was either equipped to handle that type of situation or closer to the City.

For the OP- I have heard general "meh" re: Magee which always surprises me. One of my friends that had 4 (!)- her last at Magee- said that it's a great place but, really, if you're having a "normal" birth they tend to pay less attention to you. I don't know how true that is. I have heard great things about West Penn, though.

  • I delivered at West Penn and absolutely loved it.  The nurses were great and the labor rooms are really nice.

  • Hi! My son was born at West Penn 2 years ago and I'll be delivering there again in November. My OB/GYN practice broke up and I intentionally found another practice who delivers out of West Penn because I had such a good experience. I had a birthing suite the entire stay (all 6 days of it!) and was very happy with the nursing staff and facilities.

  • I had my daughter at Jeannette with the midwives that were there and it was a wonderful experience.  They have since closed there maternity floor and the midwives are now at Forbes Regional in Monroeville.  I had my son with the midwives from the strip.  I labored at the center but ended up being transferred to AGH and had a wonderful experience there also.
