Annoyed

I called up my insurance company to find out what is covered for my pregnancy and delivery. I have pretty decent coverage, but I was informed that the imaging lab that my OB office sent me for my u/s is not in my network! I have to pay $142, which isn't bad, but I'm still annoyed. For some reason my OB office doesn't do u/s, so they send everyone to the imaging lab down the hall. It never occured to me that I wouldn't be covered. So now I have to go to the hospital for future u/s. I'm bummed because I really liked the imaging center I went to. It was a very calm and peaceful environment, and the tech was extremely nice and helpful. I have a feeling the hospital won't be the same.

I also learned that my OB office uses two different labs for bloodwork. One is covered in my network, while the other is not. I had 2 betas done in my OB office: one was sent to the in-network lab so it was covered, the other was sent to the out-of-network lab, so I'll have to pay (~$20). I am lucky that I had to go to the hospital for today's bloodwork. (The nurse couldn't get into my veins.) It was the prenatal screening bloodwork (7 vials!). I can't imagine the bill if they sent it to the out-of-network lab.

Re: Annoyed

  • Insurance can be a real pain in the butt. Since I am due in Feb, I will have to pay my deductible. How much does my OB get? $2000. But, I will only have to pay up to another $300 in hospital charges and not pay another penny! Woo HOO!

  • My Ob's office has signs everywhere informing patients that it is their responsibility to check with insurance regarding where labs and imaging can be done and to inform the office.  If you don't, you're paying OOP.

  • That's weird because mine did all the checking on their own. They said they would get back to me with a figure, and they did.

Yeah, I know I should have checked beforehand. I was naive and just assumed that since the imaging lab was in the same medical group as my OB office (which is in network) that it would also be in the network. Lesson learned!

  • I would have assumed that too.  I'm fortunate that my insurance covers me wherever I go so I don't have to think about it.

  • Be careful! ?I've delivered in 3 different hospitals and each time the anesthisoligists was not in network! ?Who would have thunk!
