Baby Names

Danish boy name

DH is Danish and it's common in Denmark to name a child "Bjorn" which means bear, but I hate Bjorn.  So, how about Bear or Baer?  Love it or hate it?

We've settled on a name for a girl and have other names we like for a boy, but this one seems to be the most controversial, so I'm curious to hear as many thoughts as possible.

Thanks!

Re: Danish boy name

  • Yeah, I agree that Bjorn is nms.  Makes me want to say Baby Bjorn every time.  Bear is kinda cool but be prepared for weird looks and references to Bear Gryllis- that guy that faked his survivorist show but stayed in hotels every night.  He's not so cool....  but will not be remembered by the time our kids are older.

  • Makes me think of BabyBjorn or the singer Bjork ... Bear reminds me of Bear Grylls, which while he's hot, he does some weird stuff.

This might be a stupid suggestion, but what about just naming him Dane, as in Dane Cook?

    Married in 2008 - DD born in 2010 - EDD 6.15.2012!
  • I have the perfect solution! How about Esben. Its derived from:
    ASBJ?RN

    Gender: Masculine

    Usage: Swedish

From the Old Norse name ?sbj?rn, derived from the elements ?ss "god" and bj?rn "bear". It is therefore a cognate of OSBORN.
  • I'm not sure about Baer. It's certainly not awful, but it kind of reminds me of Bayer Aspirin. Bauer might work, but it brings to mind Jack Bauer of 24 and isn't that close to Bjorn.

Here are some popular names in Denmark that I like:

Jonas, Henrik, Jannik, Nicholas/Nikolai, Anders, Joachim, Jantzen/Jansen, Joren

My favorite is Anders, which could be short for Anderson.

    not a fan of Bjorn

I like Anders a lot, as pp suggested?

  • I hate Bear. My cousin is named Bjorn. We are Swedish. I don't necessary like it, but it's a lot better than bear.?
  • No one likes Esben? It really grows on you. Say it 5 times.
  • Bjorn makes me think Bjork, so no, no, no

I like Bear! I think it might get you a few odd looks, but I really like it! Anders, also good, Esben....maybe...not horrible.... My vote is for Bear though!

  • My DH and I met in Denmark (we both studied abroad in Copenhagen and love LOVE Denmark). I really, really, really wanted to name DS Henrik and just call him Henry, but DH is a stick in the mud and wouldn't do it :)

I always likes Morten and Niels

  • I really don't like Bjorn, Bear, or Baer for all the reasons/connotations pp have mentioned.  And Esben??  I'm sorry....I like names that are recognizable in the U.S. as at least words, if not names, not what looks to me like a random collection of letters.

The other Danish names are far better, imo.

    bjorn - No

    bear - No

baer - anyway you spell it, No

there's gotta be better danish names out there, there's just gotta be!  if it's between these three, i'd go with bjorn.  the other two aren't names in my opinion, especially not bear.

I like the name Dane, too. And I have a cousin named Anders, which I also like.

  • Wolf Blitzer does just fine with his animal name and is smart and successful. I don't even think people give his name a second thought. It just is. So, if you love Bear/Baer then go for it!

  • Im sorry but imagine growing up as a kid with the name BEAR? or BAER?

    That is just terrible.

  • My mother's family is Danish and my husband and I really wanted to give our daughter a danish name but couldn't really find one that we liked - what girl's name did you pick??  Do you have any suggestions for danish girl names?

I agree with your thoughts on Bjorn - there are a lot of them over there but nms.  I don't love Bear/Baer but it's better than Bjorn.

  • Thanks for the responses.  It's really interesting to hear the feedback.  Most people we've talked to about it in real life like the name... maybe it's the combo of the name with our last name, maybe it's just that people know us and our style and the name fits within that.  Who knows.  Maybe they are just being nice :)  And to answer the question, yes, I CAN imagine a child having the name Bear or Baer - that's why we are considering it Smile

Like I said, we have other names in the consideration rotation, but this one always seens to get the most intersting responses!  Thanks!
