AW for mommies interested in baby signs

We've been working hard on Campbell's signs recently and she's just coming along!  She had mastered more and all done and in the past 2 weeks she's learned baby, wash, please, open and eat.  We're working on mama, help, book, milk, and drink.

Here's a link to a post on our blog where you can see video of her working on her signs.  They're at the bottom of the post.

So fun!

  • ooh, I probably should have said that she's started speech therapy and we're using ideas we got from her (toys in the box from the video, using signs in routine activities, etc).  We're also working on bath and play incidentally.

  • That is incredible!! My kids have been in speech therapy for about 2 months and I'm not noticing much improvement at all. I'll have to talk to their teacher about how to incorporate more signs into our days, because I think they're ready, I just don't know what I'm doing.
  • How do you get her to mimic you?

Our OT has been working on More and I've been trying at home, but honestly, there isn't much he wants more of (God knows it's not Food!)

That's my thing with Robbie. He doesn't mimic hand motions at all. He doesn't clap or wave or anything..

(He can make the waving motion, but he won't do it back if you do it to him, for example.)

  • That is so great!   We saw a huge jump in Olivia's willingness to communicate once she got the hang of signing.  I guess baby's like power just like the rest of us :)

Mrs.Destructo - not that I'm an expert but I have some posts on signing on my blog.  It might offer you some tips to get you started.

Tricia - Just a thought (okay two of them).  Maybe Robbie would prefer to start with All Done instead of more.  Olivia didn't want more of anything either but she def. knew when she didn't want something or was all done.   In terms of hand motions, I would really work on doing it for him with his hands.  Say "All Done" and then do the sign for him with his hands.   Perhaps if you do that actively for awhile he may start to get the hang of it.  Olivia was very similiar and over time she started doing it herself.   You can also do a physical reminder to use his hands like tapping them - you could do that with waving (say bye-bye as you wave and then tap his hand to remind him he should wave too).   What's funny now is that even though she can say All Done she will often still do the sign at the same time :)

  • Tricia, I agree with pp, I'd start with hand over hand prompting.  I also think a lot of it is readiness.  Campbell was stuck at more and all done for a while (and those were inconsistent) and then recently began pointing at objects and being more expressive with her hand movements.  Since she's been more "ready" I think she's picking up on them quicker. Also, since food isn't motivating, is there an activity such as bubbles or something that he enjoys that you could use instead?
