Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Does your baby "choke" before swallowing finger foods?

I knew a girl who did that until she was about 15 months- and she was fine. K now does it too. It isn't bad...just brief choking while she swallows. It doesn't happen all the time, and I figured she was just learning how to swallow, but this morning....she choked on a tiny bite of grits- and that has me concerned. Could something be wrong with her gag reflex or something? I'm thinking of asking the pedi about it- because she's not typically interested in solids yet either...the only thing she consistently eats is yogurt. At 8 months, the pedi said that was fine, but nothing has changed in the past month and a half.

  • p does this too. he also does it when i make his purees thicker than usual. i think it's just that they are learning to swallow thicker more textured food.

  • It's called gagging and it's totally normal. They do it when they're introduced to new textures, sizes of food, etc. And I actually read an article that says it's important for them to go through the whole gagging thing because it not only teaches them what to do with the food once in their mouths, but it also teaches them how much they can put in their mouths, etc.

If DS gets something on his tongue and doesn't exactly know what to do with it, he gags. Sometimes he pukes, sometimes he figures out what he needs to do with it and finally swallows.

    Nothing to get worried about!

  • choke or gag?

DS definitely gags sometimes, but there's nothing really caught in his throat.  I just assumed it was normal since he's getting used to eating.

  • Ohhh, maybe it gag is a better term. I wasn't worried about it until this morning when she did it with grits, since they're practically mush. Thanks for easing my mind. :)

DD does this quite frequently.  Even with the tiniest soft bits of food like cheese.  But the odd thing is sometimes she vomits after she is done eating, not while eating.  I'm going to go really really slow with the finger foods, DD has a really bad gag reflex.  Hopefully it will get better in the next couple months.  Right now we are mostly on stage 2 purees.

  • DD gagged frequently with finger foods for a long time...she probably stopped it altogether about a month ago.  Scared the bejeezus out of me, but we kept trying since she was gagging, not choking, and she's fine now.  She made herself throw up fairly often (2-3x/week) -- it bothered us a lot more than it bothered her.  I wish I had better advice, we had to just steel ourselves and wait it out (watching her like hawks in the meantime).  GL!
  • DS did that a lot when we were introducing a lot of new foods.  I think it's just the new texture- he was kind of confused what to do.  If you eat something you don't like, your instict is probably to spit it out.  I think the gagging comes from them not knowing how to spit (intentionally).  Gagging is probably the closest thing

  • Has she had grits before. They are definitley a different texture than a lot of other foods. Maybe she just didn't like the way it felt.

  • DD does this too.  She is fine with puffs, Mum Mums and yogurt melts, but anything with a little bit of texture makes her gag.  So far we have tried steamed chunks of sweet potatoes and carrots, bananas, mandarin oranges and tiny bits of grilled cheese...all made her gag on the way down.  She did pretty good with pancakes though.
