Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What does your pedi say about Peanutbutter?

Now I haven't officially talked to my pedi about this...we have our 1 year appointment on Thurs...but I keep hearing so many different things about peanutbutter and when you can and can't offer it.  So, I'm curious.

-I've heard if no known allergy in family can intro after are 1 years old.

-I've also heard NONE until 2 years.

What did your pedi say? How do you feel about it?

**FWIW..I so hope my girls don't have a nut allergy (they do NOT run in either of our families)  b/c Seriously peanutbutter should be a food group! :)

Just curious.

TIA.

  • Hi I am from the St. Louis area!

But my pedi said 12 months was fine for everything as long as there are no known allergies in the family.

  • My pedi said if no history then you can intro at 1 year.  I waited until sixteen months.

  • Ditto pp.  No allergies in our family so we tried it after DS's 15-month appt. when I asked the question.
  • she said everything after 12 mos is ok except choking hazards like hot dogs grapes and peanuts.  she said creamy PB is ok now and DD eats it on whole wheat bagels or in a PB&J sandwich almost every day.
  • My pedi said that there were no more restrictions for us at 12 months (we have no known allergies in our immediate family).  He also stated that there is new research pointing to introducing allergenic foods earlier to avoid these issues---so I have no idea if the "rules" will change sometime soon!

  • Thanks ladies for fulfilling my curiousity!

I have to admit, that I am thinking of waiting until at least September, if my pedi says 12 months is okay, though b/c my girls were born at 30 weeks!

  • Our pedi said no restrictions excepts nuts until he was 2.  There are no known family allergies.  I do also restrict seafood, just because seafood allergies can be scary and I'm a worrier.

  • I'm pretty sure my pedi has said to wait until at least 2.  My allergist said to wait until age 3.  My SIL has a severe allergy, but he said that it's unlikely that DS will have an allergy.  He said some parents will be extra cautious and bring their baby/kid into the office for a scratch test as their intro to peanut butter.  I plan on just starting with a tiny amount - probably after age 3.
