Speaking of nut allergies.....

2/3 weeks ago DH and I were running errands and stopped at Five Guys Burgers and Fries. We had brought DD's lunch with us because we didn't know where we were going to eat. DH ordered are food and I got DD set up with her lunch. I headed off to use the ladies room and when I came back DD was devouring her 2nd french fry. I asked DH what in the holly heck he was doing as there are large signs posted everywhere stating their french fries are cooked in peanut oil. DH then freaked out. Since the 'damage' was already done we just watched her carefully. She was fine and had no reaction. I am now under the impression that she has been introduced to peanuts and is not allergic. DH is not. He wants to hold off on peanut butter. Does anyone else think this is silly?

Re: Speaking of nut allergies.....

  • Actually an allergic reaction is more likely to occur the 2, 3 or 4th time of exposure. I would still hold off but then again I am allergic and the reactions are terrible and can't imagine being a baby and not being able to speak that my throat was itchy or swelling.

  • It is true that the reaction usually comes the 2nd or 3rd time they are exposed, but, our pedi said we could give peanut butter and peanut products (as long as they weren't a choking hazard) after 1 year.  So if DS didn't have any other food allergies (which he does), then we would have offered it to him months ago.

I think it depends on the type of peanut oil used.  Not all peanut oil contains allergens.  She may or may not have been exposed.
  • Thanks ladies. I guess I should have mentioned that the pedi said it was ok because she hasn't had any other reactions and we do not have a history of allergies in our family. I talked to DH and we will hold off a bit. I would be upset if he did something that I did not feel comfortable with.......like a fist full of french fries. :)
