Pregnant after 35

Anyone going organic?

I went to the grocery store last night and while I was there my DH called and said I needed to buy organic milk.  I had 2 healthy babies drinking regular milk and organic milk is SO expensive, esp considering I love milk and tend to drink it oftern.  I bought regular but told DH we would do more research.

I'd love to hear other opinions on whether organic really is the way to go.

 Thanks!

Re: Anyone going organic?

  • I would LOVE to... but it's not in our budget.  The best I'm doing is reading labels and buying products that have less artificial ingredients.

  • Well, I don't normally buy organic too much. But for milk to give my kids, I will buy organic. I have some real concerns about the hormones in milk and the prevalence of early onset puberty in girls.

Other than that the extra cost of organic is just too much.

I went organic when I was pregnant with my first.  Not all the food is more expensive, & in some cases we just buy all natural.  I do not like the extra additives in food & think they are unnecessary & not good for your digestive system, as well as the food coloring in young children with behavior - but especially with milk & meat & the added hormones (as the pp wrote).  I live at Trader Joes!

My husband was not for it when we started (cost), but he see's the light & he honestly feels better when he eats this way, so he knows it's better for our kids too!

  • Much of the food we buy is local, which is more important to me than organic. I get my milk in glass bottles from the farmers' market.the farm has not applied for organic certification, because of the cost, but they follow organic practices. It is pasteurized and homogenized. It comes from a farm 40 minutes from my house.

Organic milk from the grocery travels further to get to the consumer than regular milk. That is a problem for me.

  • Thanks for the input. Unfortunately we don't have a Trader Joes close by. We do have a weekly farmer's market though and my DH did say we will start buying all of our fruits, vegetables and as much meat as we can there. I don't know if anyone there sells milk. I have seen cheese though. We've been doing all of our shopping @ Kroger and I did see on their milk that they do not use theartificial growth hormone rbST (also known as rbGH).

Almost forgot.. we buy local too - especially at the regular grocery store!  It supports our local farmers & they do not use pesticides or growth hormones.

I use to travel an hour and 45 minutes to go to our closest Trader Joe's (just buy in bulk).. I was so happy when they opened one a town away!  Whole foods is a lot more pricey, so I only go there for specific specialty items.

  • I try to buy local and organic as much as possible but I am not perfect. Because of the cost, I try to prioritize. Bananas, for instance, are peeled so I am not as concerned about them being organic as opposed to something like lettuce. I do not compromise on milk, though.

We also belong to a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) where you buy a "share" of a local farmer's business each season and then in return you get a box full of veggies every week.

  • I do with certain foods. I try to buy organic milk and chicken/fish without antibiotics (I'm not sure if they're technically organic--it's the antibiotics that I'm most concerned with). And I try to buy organic strawberries and other fruits that are considered heavy on the pesticides when grown conventionally. But like maschmidt, I'm not perfect (yesterday at the market, they didn't have the organic milk I buy so I bought a small carton of regular), but I try to do what I can when it makes sense.

We're not totally organic, but milk is one of the things we only buy organic because of the hormones in non-organic milk.
  • Not organic, but we have always purchased our milk from the local dairy (sold in stores) and that is hormone-free.

  • I buy some items that are organic.

I do remember hearing on the news that the term organic is not regulated.  So there is no way to prove that the farmer really is using organic means to farm his land.

  • I usually hate regular milk, but since I've been pregnant, I absolutely must have milk every single day.  I decided to go with Horizon DHA + Omega 3.  I don't know if it tastes better to me than regular milk because it's organic and has the supplements, or if my tastes have changed because I'm pregnant, but I LOVE this milk.  I go through 2 half gallons a week by myself.  We get the 3 pack at Sam's Club for $10.
  • My DH and I have a garden so that is our "organic". We also buy local when we can. I do not drink organic milk but probably need to.
