Crib Bedding - Did you buy the set or go a la carte?

DH and I went crib shopping yesterday (leaning towards Munire Madison or Majestic but still want to see Westwood), and that got me thinking about crib bedding. Most of the places I've looked online seem to sell a bedding collection which generally includes a quilt, a bumper, crib sheet and 1-3 other items.

But we will not be using a bumper due to SIDS risk, and you can't use the quilt for the crib either (even though most of them are so cute!). So my questions are:

If you bought the set, what are you doing with those pieces?

And if you bought items a la carte, can you please recommend some good websites/locations to buy?

Yea, that's my thought too. And the quilt is way to small for it to keep me warm! I might use it as a wall hanging/backing for the chair. As for the bumpers,I thought they were back in? I can't figure it out! I'll have toask the Ob. It seems that is always a flip flop issue!

We are also going gender neutral. If we have a girl after this, I'd rather not buy the whole set again...but I do want extra crib sheets. Sigh..the companies don't really make it easy do they? But they sure make it expensive!

I went with the set...huge mistake. We won't be using the bumper (we are getting a breathable bumper due to the SIDS risk). We can only use the mobile for a short time.

I would recommend finding an al la carte collection and buying the fitted sheet, crib skirt, and a cute blanket that matches. BRU and Target have separates.

You are right about all points, and most reasonably, you should buy a la carte.

However, I was able to find the set I loved from BRU on Overstock for half the price. At only $130, I can use the "quilt" as a wall hanging, or something to snuggle with baby while on the glider, etc.

The bumper is still up for debate. 2 pediatricians saying 2 different things. That will have to be your discretion, I assume.

We bought the Munire Madison and we are going to go a la carte for bedding. As for the bumper, we are going with the breathable mesh. We heard so many opinions and just decided that we would err on the side of caution for this one item. We have found some cute basic bedding at BRU & Target that we liked.

I found the 9-piece set brand new on ebay for $49.99 so I totally went for it. For now, all the goodies are in the crib and looking oh-so-cute. I'll just take them out when LO gets here (or even leave them in there while she is sleeping only in her bassinet for the first few months).

yep we are going separate. Haven't decided where to get them, I'm going to Burlington Coat Factory where there is a Baby Depot to see what I can find.

we're doing a la carte. I'm putting the sheet and bumpers on for show until they actually use the cribs. I'm going to drape the comforter over the side if we get them (on registry). I purchased each piece seperately at Target.

I think it's just up to you what you feel you want to do, you can really go either way like a lot of the mother's have said. With my first son we kept him in his cradle for so long with only the sheet in there and used sleeper sets...once he was in his crib he was strong enough to move around and move his head around that having the bumper in there wasn't a concern really, but we didn't use the comforter until he was much older. I just hung it on the rocking chair for a while...he is now two and likes to snuggle with it. So with this baby I went with an adorable set I bought from nurserydepot.com and will be doing the same thing. Good luck momma with your decision and looking for the perfect bedding Smile

we bought a set this time, and for DS. we did not use the bumper at first, but as they get older, and SIDS is no longer a risk, you'llwant the bumper. we used a breathable bumper for probably 7-8 months, but he kept bumping his head, since there is no padding. we put the regular bumper in after that, and he is fine (13 months now).

also, we used the quilt for tummy time so he wasn't laying directly on the carpet.

you dont NEED a set, but we got a god deal on both of ours, and do use all of the pieces.

We did a hybrid approach... I found a set I really liked and bought pieces from it, but bought the sheets, bumper, etc a la carte. As pp said, BRU & Target are great for a la carte pieces.

We went a la carte. I just bought the quilt (which will come in handy as a tummy time mat later on), crib sheets, and matching receiving blankets. We didn't want the bumper, and the dust ruffle just collects dust!

I've been thinking about this, we find out soon if we are having a boy or girl so that'll help with my search. If it's a boy (monkey theme) I've found a lot of cute sets at Baby Depot; i was thinking of using the little quilt on the wall above the crib. If we have a girl I have no idea what to do and I know there is no chance I'll find a set based off the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (that's our girl theme). I figure I'll look and see if I can't find something in pale pinks or have to search for?pieces, which so far I haven't found anything. Based on the baby's room alone it'd be much easier if we just had a boy.?

Now that I think about it I could probably put the bumper around the bottom of the crib to kind of help hide baskets or totes (whatever I put under it). Or i could use it to make up some sort of valance or other wall decor, between my mom and I we are really creative so we'll figure something out. ?

A la carte. We were given a beautiful handmade black, white, and red quilt for our wedding that will hang on the wall behind the crib. I also bought a baby quilt in black and white from etsy that we'll use in the crib when he gets older (andprobably throw on the rocker for now), along with a matching changing pad cover. I'm getting a breathable safety bumper in white, and white sheets that will be covered by a waterproof sheet protector anyway. Much cheaper than a set, and completely unique.

I was stupid with DS and bought a whole set, because it was cute and matched his room decor, but for the reasons you cited (quilt not supposed to be used right away, bumpers are SIDS risk), I never used it and it is still in his closet in the original packaging. We went with Carter's jersey sheets from BRU and an incredible assortment of blankets that we were given as gifts.

We bought an entire set for DS and it's nice, it made his room super cute, but a waste of money. He still sleeps with the bumper and I still use the crib skirt. The blanket gets hung on the wall, and we put sleepers in his diaper stacker. This time around I'll get a bumper (either traditional or breathable) and a skirt with a few sheets per crib.

Like you, we aren't using a bumper or quilt. I emailed people on Etsy for bids, and I am having someone make the crib skirt in a fabric that I chose. Then we're ordering three to four solid sheets from Buy Buy Baby. As for a blanket, we are thinking of ordering a few Miracle Blankets.

We purchased the set but I'm sure we will use all of the items. I know we will put the bumper on immediately. When my son started moving, he used to bang his head up against the crib. Luckily the bumper was there to protect him. I won't go without one. When the baby gets older, she might want to use the comforter. We like to keep the house cold at night so if she is anything like my first, she will want it.

I utilized the bumper, as well as the quilt. When DD was a newborn, I took out the bumper then put it back when I think she was about 6 months. Otherwise.. her head would have been banging on the wood from being a wiggle worm! her favorite spot was in a corner for some reason.

As for the quilt, it hung over the sleigh bar on crib on display, then I used it for her to lay on the floor while she was immobile, then when she got older she liked covering up with it. I also used it on the toddler bed as well. It is the same size.

If you find something you really love, I say go for it. You can always use it. I got 3 yrs use out of the quilt... so I don't feel it was money wasted at all

a la carte this time. With DD we received a set.. like you mentioned, we never used the bumper (got a breatheable one) and the quilt is just on the glider. The sheets that come w/ a set are stiffer and colder then the jersey material ones, so we don't use that either. Basically, all we used was the window valance and the diaper stacker. Neither of which are necessary. Oh, and we used the skirt until we lowered the mattress all the way, but the mattress lowers a few inches off the ground w/ DD#1's crib so we can't use it anymore (after 7 months) anyway.

I know some people say you can eventually use the quilt, but honestly, I thought it was stiff and too thick to ever be used. DD much prefers cozy blankets over that thing.

So this time:
~I bought jersey/knit sheets at BRU.
~I found a cute crib skirt and diaper stacker online at Target along with a matching rug (free shipping), and
~I got super cute drapes at PBK outlet.
~I'm planning on getting another breatheable bumper at BRU or Amazon.
~I also found an adorable and soft blanket to use as decoration now and to actually use for baby later at Buy Buy Baby.

Everything I got is green and lavender to match the room and "theme". I found a great lavender rug at Land of Nod.com in addition to the Target one, and I made a bird mobile and some artwork myself. And that's it, nursery complete!

The more and more I've looked, I'm pretty sure I'll be going a la carte...

#1 because it doesn't make sense to me to spend money on quilts / bumpers etc. that you "aren't supposed" to use anyway

#2 we are not finding out sex of LO so that helps narrow it down, simple patterns neutral colors etc.

#3 i'm sure i'll be getting some beautiful hand made blankets / afghans etc. when it comes to shower time so i'll let LO enjoy those when s/he is big enough
