NBR: painting a brick fireplace

We have a brick wall in the living room that houses the fireplace and mantel.  Unfortunately, when we moved into the house it was already painted with something.  Maybe it is a white wash or something, I don't know.  I makes the nice red/orange/brown brick look various shades of pink, mauve, and tan.  It is ugly.  I want to have it painted - the entire wall - to match the trim of the room.  The walls are a khaki-ish color and the trim is an off white.  Will this lower the value of the house when we get ready to sell because the brick is painted?  If it didn't already have a "finish,"  I would let it stay without question.  Thanks for your knowledge and opinions.

  • i don't think it would. it would be better to paint it than just sit as is....THAT i would think would lower the value of the house

  • I work in real estate and a painted fireplace has never effected the value in any way.  I actually painted our fireplace when we bought our house.  Hope that helps.  Anything that is more neutral appeals to the masses and helps sell a house but the paint won't lower your value.  Good luck!
  • Thanks.  The painter is scheduled to come on Monday - we are lazy and loved our painter.  Off to search for no VOC primer..does that exist?
