Would you use used bottles??

I went to a mom-to-mom sale and thought I got a great deal on Advent bottles and a?sanitizer. ?Six bottles and the sanitizer for five dollars. ?When I told my sister about my great find she looked at me like I had a third eye. ?She said it was disgusting to use used bottles with my baby even if I bought new nipples and everything. ?

Maybe I am missing something, because I did not think it would be that big of a deal.

So to use used bottles, yes or no?

Re: Would you use used bottles??

  • Yeah, I bought some at a mom to mom sale too.  As long as you sanitize them and buy new nipples, I don't think it's a big deal!  You have to save money where ever you can.  I say, great find!!!

  • I think as long as you bought new nipples and sterilized the s*it out of the remaining bottle parts, you'd be good to go.  Avent bottles are normally over $10 a piece so to get six plus a sterilizer for $5.00 sounds like a steal to me.  I'd just boil them really well the first time, rather than using what I'm guessing is a microwave sterilizer.

I would just make sure they are BPA free bottles. Honestly, that would be my only concern.

  • I wouldn't mind used bottles, but I would buy new nipples for them and make sure I have everything sterilized.

  • Personally I wouldn't use used bottles but I guess it isn't much different from my son drinking from the school's cups at daycare.  I would just make sure they are BPA free.
  • I think as long as you get new nipples and sanitize them, you're fine.

  • My initial reaction is that my nostrils flared out a little... but then do you actually think that each child in a daycare gets a brand new bottle? As long as you sterilize the bottle it's probably fine...
  • Ditto PP - as long as they are BPA free and you buy new nipples I don't see an issue.
***************************** Our beautiful daughter was born in October 2009. Turns out she was quite the miracle. After two years of TTC, diagnosed with DOR. A couple of failed treatment cycles later, we decided to let go of our hope for more biological children and explore adoption.
  • It's fine! I got some used ones too.
  • I read this post and was like "what, used bottles" but honestly, I never have thought about it. do they have liners? I know so little.!
  • I would totally use them!  Great find!  Just get new nipples.
  • Yes - I would....
  • Are they glass?  If so sure

Plastic bottles are not supposed to be used for multiple children, even in the same family.  The plastic degrades over time harboring bacteria

  • As PP have said sanitized and BPA free, I would. How that any different than when you go out to a restruant and get something to drink?  How many many different people drank out of that glass?

  • I would as long as you sterilize them. Anyone who says "plastic harbors bacteria" are you going to keep your child from crawling on the floor, touching walls, playing with bugs, playing in the mud... Bacteria is everywhere... Used bottles= great find on your part!  :)

Well then why bother even sanitizing if your child is going to pick up bacteria elsewhere anyways

Just wanted to add another note.  Depending on when the bottles were manufactured, you'll want to make doubly sure they don't contain BPA

  • I would use them if they are BPA free.

You might need new rings as well as nipples though - for leaking reasons, not sanitation.

For anyone who would not use used bottles... do you drink from cups at restaurants? What's the difference?

We don't use plastic in our house and don't eat out very often (and it seems like most restaurants we go to use glass...)

And breast milk doesn't go in cups at restaurants

  • And FWIW, I never would have given the used bottles thing a second thought until a friend told me that in one of the lectures for a class in nursing school they were taught that plastic bottles should only be used for 1 child and then tossed.  That was one of the catalysts towards looking into glass instead for me.

You might ask your pediatrician what they think

  • Yep I would. New nips and nice sanitizing bath and you're good to go!
  • Yes, I'd use used bottles, though I would buy new nipples- I think I'm going to buy new nipples for this DC even though I know where DS's have been- they're 4 years old now, and looking a little worse for the wear. I actually can't find DS's bottles, and it's pissing me off, because now I'm going to go have to buy new ones... I think I need to find one of these mom-to-mom sales you speak of and get some bottles!

I don't think this is necessarily true for all types of bottles. I used the playtex liners with DS, so IMO, BPA free or not, they'll be fine to use for a second, third or fifteenth child, b/c the food is only coming in contact with the liner and the nipple, which I would buy new of. I fully plan on reusing the sippy cups from DS (at least the ones that are still in good shape) because that stuff is ridiculously expensive!

  • No because all used bottles are most likely NOT BPA free. I have about twenty Dr. Browns wide mouth bottles that I'm going to donate so I can buy new BPA free bottles.

Would you buy used dishes? It doesn't seem right to me.
