Could my water have broken?

I woke up at 3:30am for my usual hourly trip to the bathroom.  When I stood up, I felt some leakage onto my panties.  Then after I was finishing urinating, I still had some trickling/dripping into the toilet.  Went back to bed totally prepared for a gush of fluid and got nothing.  Haven't felt anything since.  I've got to believe that if it were my water breaking that there would be more fluid, but I wanted to post here and see if any of you have experienced something so minor that turned out to be water breaking.

I am getting so tired of all the gray areas we deal with; I prefer black and white and either it happened or it didn't!  If I go in for this, it will be my 5th hospital admission.  Just don't want to be an idiot in L&D, but with this being my first pregnancy, I have no experience to rely upon!

Thanks for any help you may have to offer!

Re: Could my water have broken?

  • It could be I guess, as sometimes when babies are head down they can cut off the big 'gush' of fluid. But you're right, it's a grey area- I also had leakage rigth down my leg into a small puddle after going to the bathroom once but talked to the nurses & we decided it was just urine, that I hadn't totally emptied, but I didn't have it before I went.?

GL, I don't have much advice but you should probably call to feel better! At this point, if there is no more leakage, I'm not really sure if they can test & see if it was amniotic fluid? I have no idea. ?

  • I'm actually dealing with that exact same thing right now... I'm holding off until I note contractions or more fluid.  When my water broke with DD, I had an initial tiny gush, and then until delivery, mini gushes with contractions.  Because you are only 34 weeks, though, I would call your doc...

  • OMG!! JILL.. I cannot believe you are 34 weeks!! Can't wait to hear if the boys are really on their way!!
  • Have you had any stronger contractions since then?  Both times I've been induced with breaking my water, I started with strong contractions within about a half hour to an hour.  With my first, I could have sworn my water broke in the middle of the night... we went in to L&D and the nurse said that she thought I just lost my mucus plug : (

The thing is, if you're wondering at all, they'll probably make you go in because of the risk of infection.  There's a simple swab they can do that will quickly tell them whether your water actually broke.  (Even though you'll probably still end up at the hospital for HOURS for monitoring!!) : (

I had something similar happen when I was pregnant. I had liquid cover my panties. I called the dr and they checked me at the office, it turned out to be just from pregnancy.

When my water did break, I didn't get the gush, but it was much different. I had the same thing, but then it continued and contractions got stronger. Plus anytime I would push (like i was peeing) more would come out, if I caughed or sneezed same thing. When I walked around, more came out. I ended up sitting on a towel until we were ready to leave the hospital.

By the time we made it to the hospital (water broke at 3:45, took a shower and shaved my legs :), got around and drove in) I was begging for my epidural because of how strong the contractions got.

It is always safe to call, each person is different.

  • It could have broken but usually there is a continuous drip/flow. My water broke this pregnancy with the twins, and it was a gush....a huge gush that flowed like you would not believe!!! The water continue to come out until I gave birth. The flow lessen after the initial gush ended but was an obvious and annoying flow. I also did not start having contractions right away. Usually once the water breaks, contractions really kick in. Good luck and best wishes! Call the doc just to make sure either way.
