SAHM and breast pump recommendations?

I'll be a SAHM and BF (fingers crossed) but want to know your thoughts on pumps as I'm conflicted, so . . .

Did you have one?

How often did you pump? (I'm thinking I'll only need/want the occassional bottle so I/we can go out or to get DH involved)

Manual or Electric?

What brand?

I'm leaning toward a highly rated manual for the occasional pump but would love to hear some first hand experiences and brand recs.

Thanks ladies!

  • I have the lansinoh double electric.  I love it!  I had some issues in the beginning and had to pump every day around the clock.  It was great and it didn't affect my supply when I went from the hospital pump I was renting to it.

I now only pump occasionally, but it's still nice to have the electric.  It takes long enough with that to pump a bottle for DS.

  • I stayed home with DS and found a Medela PIS on Ebay for $100. I didn't pump right away and had a lot of nursing issues with DS. I was thankfull I bought the electric pump. With DD I nursed for awhile but also pumped from the beginning to build a stash (I knew I was going back to work). I ended up being laid off but continued to pump. I really hadn't liked the Medela that much so I got the Ameda Purely Yours (highly recommend). From my experiences, I would say get one. If nursing does not go well then you have it. By buying early, you can shop around for a good price instead of needing one immediately and paying $$$ for it.
  • yeah........

i thought the same thing. however, DD would never BF and I wound up exclusively pumping for an entire year. that being said if you want to buy a manual fine. however dont open it until you are well established into BFing- so you can return it and buy a good electric.

  • Just so you know the ameda purely yours and lansinoh double electric are the same thing.  Not sure of the price of the ameda, but I got the lansinoh for $150.

  • The Lansinoh is basically the Ameda so it would be a good purchase. I got a really good deal on the Ameda from a friend otherwise I would have gone with the Lansinoh.
  • I have the Medela PISA.  LOVE it!!  I pumped religiously the first month or two and build up a great stash, then only pump as needed after that.  The first few months my milk production is awesome, but later, when I haven't been pumping every day, it can take 2 or more sessions to pump one 6oz bottle (compared to 12 oz at one pump session at the start).

I always recommend the electric pumps.  Even as a sahm, there were countless times I pumped - a night out, a trip to the store, a break in the middle of the night, etc.

  • I have a Medela PIS dual electric. MUCH easier for me and more efficient. I had a rough time with a manual pump (had an Avent one that stunk).

  • Thank you so much for your advice!  I figured that I'd end up wanting an electric when all was said and done so I think I'll just bite the bullet and get one now.  It sounds like it's pretty unlikely it'd sit in its box unused.

Now, an electric pump should last for the next few years and a few kids right?  : )

  • It should. My medela went through 2 owners and 4 kids. The Ameda has gone through 2 owners and 2 kids.

It should. This will be my 3rd kid with my Medela.  The only thing I've replaced is the tubing and shields.

  • My cousin lent me her pump after she finished pumping (her LO is 10 months older than DS). I ended up never pumping though. I never really felt the need to, and I had horrible oversupply issues so it was better to not pump.
