Cat owners-a question

My cat is a snuggle puss at night and often times he will wake me up curled up and purring on my face! No big deal for me but I am a little worried about when the baby gets here- she will be in a cradle in our room. The kitty loves closed in little places so I am having nightmares of finding him sleeping on baby's face.

Once we move her to her room no big deal, we will keep her door shut, but what to do in the meantime? I feel bad kicking him out but I guess that is the only real option...I know they make crib covers but do they make them for bassinets? Our cradle is homemade by my FIL (and beautiful btw) and isn't a standard size.

Re: Cat owners-a question

  • We have been training our three cats to sleep in the living room. It wasn't easy at first but I figured it was for the best since our daughter will be in our room for a month and then in her own room. The cats are not allowed in her room at all. As hard as it is I feel much safer with our fur babies in the living room.

  • I'm pretty sure I have seen netting that would fit over a bassinet if that is what you had in mind. Or, perhaps you could modify the crib netting to fit your custom made bassinet? I could not tell you where I have seen this stuff, though, as I have looked at so much baby crap over the past eight months.
  • What about if you used nettign liek for a stroller or PNP? It may deter kitty anyways. We have the bassinet set up already & have been training kitty not to go in there, you may want to try that.

  • I've heard cats can suffocate a newborn. I would keep them in another room just to be safe. It's only temporary. You might start doing it now, so they won't be crying outside your bedroom door when the baby arrives.

  • We kicked ours out of the bedroom.  100% all of the time, door stays closed.  Do it now so they don't associate the eviction with that hollering monster of a baby that's monopolizing all of your time and cuddling - cat's perception, not mine!  Wink There will be some tragic kitty crying at your door for the first few nights (weeks) but DO NOT CAVE!  It broke me heart, but it had to be done.

We're also thinking that the cats will be so weirded out by our stinky, noisy baby that they'll want to stay the hell away, but better safe than sorry.

  • They do make bassinet covers, but your best solution is probably to shut your cat out of your room completely at night. In fact, you should start now so your cat has time to get used to the new arrangement. If you can, get him a bed, or find a bed that he likes and make him a new "nest" to sleep in at night.

  • I lined the crib mattress and bassinet with aluminum foil and it only took one or two attempts to jump in to scare our cat from investigating them further. im sure a cooing baby will create interest but we will deal then.
  • I agree with the pp- aluminum foil is good.  I would set up the bassinet now, line it with foil and put a spray bottle near your bed.  When the cat gets in or tries to, spray the cat.  We have trained our cat not to get on certain furniture by using the spray bottle.  Good Luck!
  • Do you really think your kitty will want to be near the baby? Ours really is scared of babies and children, so I am pretty sure she won't go near him until he's older... she also isn't a cuddler, so I'm not worried. If you are worried, I would keep your bedroom door closed.
  • I really would not take the risk.  Yeah, there are things that you could do to try and prevent it.  But even if you think you have your cat trained not to do it, she might decide to try it one night.

Most pediatricians and safety experts strongly recommend closing the door and keeping pets out of the room completely.
