3rd Trimester

eating spicy food

An old wives tale I know, but I thought "what the heck?!" and had pretty spicy chicken tortilla soup... all it did was give me heartburn.

What is the spicy food supposed to do?  Clean out your system or something with the cervix?  Piss Baby off enough to come out?

Re: eating spicy food

  • I regularly eat spicy food so I dont really think it does anything for people - at least it wont for me.  I imagine if you arent used to it, it will clean out your intestines quite nicely.....

  • My doula said that labor starts off feeling like intestinal issues. So maybe eating spicy food makes you feel like that? But no, I don't think it will cause labor.

  • my dr actually mentioned this today. She said they think it work by causing bowel movements nad distress which can cause labor. kind of like castor oil.

I can't see it workng for me though as I love spicy food, eat it on a regular basis and have no issues at all when I eat it.

  • to answer my own question:

How could eating spicy food work to induce labor naturally?

If you understand the physiology of what can stimulate contractions, it makes sense that eating spicy foods may in fact induce labor in some cases. Spicy food can stimulate your digestive system and may even irritate it. The irritation may cause you to have diarrhea. If the diarrhea causes dehydration, we know that one of the side effects of dehydration in pregnant women is to cause contractions to start.

Spicy food may also induce labor by increasing prostaglandin production. The hormone prostaglandins helps to contract the smooth muscles of the body and are known to play a role in inducing labor.

  • Just remember that if it does work you might end up seeing - and regretfully feeling - all that spicy food again since most women feel nauseated and many vomit at some point during labor. I totally lucked out because I had eaten most of a large pizza with tons of red pepper flakes just before my water broke. When the L&D nurses found out what I had eaten for dinner, they brought me *three* of those emesis (vomit) tubs. Thank goodness I never had to use them, but I'm sure I won't be so lucky this time around.
