I have been taking different vitamins trying to find one that won't make me vomit, with no luck. I have heard that you can take Flintstones chewables instead, and am seriously considering it. Anyone here do this, and if so do you take 1 or 2? TIA
I haven't heard or done that - but I would check with your doc first. Prenatals have higher levels of certain minerals and vitamins specifically for pregnancy - like folic acid or DHA - that aren't in kids chewables. Maybe the doctor can recommend one that's easier to digest? Also - try taking it at night - that has helped me alot.
Talk with your doctor before doing anything... call them if your next appt. isn't for awhile.
In the prenatal class I took, my doctor said that if anyone in the class was having trouble keeping prenatal vitamins down, to speak with her and she could provide an alternate method...
Not sure what it is because I haven't had that problem but definitely check!
I checked all of the % against the prenatal I am currently on, and the only thing it was missing was the DHA.... I have been taking them at different times of the day to try to figure out if night was better, and it still makes me sick.. Just trying to find a way to keep some vitamins down rather than none at all.
I feel your pain! These prenatal vitamins are like horse pills... how do they expect us to deal with M/S and with big-ass multivitamins. But anyway, the best answer is check with your doctor first.
At first, I was having trouble with my prenatals, and the doc said I could go ahead and try those Flintstone gummies (sounds good to me!) but since I already had a pack of the prenatals, I finished those off and haven't had the desire to try something new... yet. I believe the doc told me to take two at a time... not sure about that though.
I take 2 Flinstone Complete every day. Both my RE and OB said it was ok. With 2, you get 800 mcg of folic acid which was how much my PNV's had. They don't have DHA. If you're concerned about that, you can take a DHA supp. They smell and gross me out. I just can't.
Try taking your prenatal just before bed and have a couple of crakers. You can also ask your OB for a chewable version if its the swallowing that is bothering you.
I have talked to both my OB and GP and they both think it is fine!! I take 2 flintstones because prenatals made me really sick. I also take and extra 800 mg of folic acid on top of that (this is what both Dr's recommended I do). GL!!
I asked yesterday, and I was told that as long as I got 800mcg of folic acid right now that it's fine (I think thats 2 flintstones, I have to look), so I plan on buying a jar of the Flintstones just to have on hand for the days that I'm extra sick feeling and can at least get that down instead of choking on one of those horse pills. As for the DHA I was told that becomes important in the second trimester. I was given a sample yesterday and they are HUGE. About double the size of the regular pnv. I don't see how that will ever go down, so I may see about getting the dha with out being mixed with a vitamin. HTH.
if your looking for DHA suppliment the Expecta brand by Lipel are great. they coat them with a lemon flavor to help not make you sick they smell good and are soft gels so they go down easy. they are expensive....$11 for a month supply at Target but i just saw them at Walmart for $7.99 and every box comes with a $1 off coupon. hope this helps!!
My doc said it was fine too. I take Flinstones complete, an extra folic acid pill, and extra DHA pill. It was worked for me, no stomach aches and no constipation. My problem was constipation.
My doc ok'ed 2 flintstones too, but 2 flintstones means double the amount of iron that is probably in your prenatal. I'm sensitive to iron and it make things really slow movin' down there if you know what I mean! Just something to think about if constipation is bothering you!
I was concerned about keeping my prenatals down when my morning sickness was at its worst and my doctor told me I could take the Flintstones vitamins. Also, make sure you are taking your vitamins with a meal- that may help keep them down. Good luck
The Flintstones complete have the same stuff as in the OTC prenatals. I got sick of the prenatals and started taking Flintstones several months ago. My OB said that was perfectly fine at my last appointment. I take one per day.
Re: Flintstones vs. traditional prenatals...
Check the vitamin A content before you take more than one, as you don't want to OD on Vitamin A.
But, some folic acid is better than none, so take a normal dose.
Another option: Viactive chewables (chocolate flavor) have less Vitamin A than Flintstones, but the same amt. of Folic Acid.

My OB approved for me to take 1 Flintstone a day.
